Public holidays are awesome for studying!
I have completed chapter 9 today.
@78125766Suzan My example didn't open correctly either, I discovered that this is because the strip tags function was not commented out from the php code. It appears as follows:
Language: PHP//$first_name = htmlspecialchars($first_name);
$first_name = strip_tags($first_name, "<B>");
//$f

This section has taken me a good couple of days to get through. I was very interested to learn about the include function. I work in Joomla cms and from not seeing it in the php files I manipulate, makes me think that this function would only be used for adding something which was either forgotten or an afterthought.

I have finished this section, I found it enjoyable, although I got a little side tracked looking up the names of the band that I should have known

Finished with section 5 and understood. I will do some more examples though as I haven't done programming before and although I can read and understand the code, I am not completely ready to write it myself without referring back.

Hi Everyone
Thanks so much for all the input. I really thought it was the curly bracket in the wrong place, however, when I started on section 5 and saw the same curly bracket in the same place, I was stumped.
Problem solved it is the name of the submit button.

I have just gone back to look at this code in the tutorial. The chapter "Checking if the Submit Button of a HTML Form was Clicked" gives the following example:
Language: PHPif (isset($_POST[';Submit';])) {
$username = $_POST[';username';];
if ($username = = "letmein") {
print ("Welcome back, friend!&qu

Hi Elizabeth
Yep, that is exactly the same mistake I made. It is the very first closing curly bracket. It needs to be closed after the first line of code and not at the end of the code.
eg:
Language: PHPif(isset($_POST[';Submit';])){
}
Then remove one of your closing curly brackets from the end of your code.

I have finished this section. I found it rather difficult and needed to refer to the text book and some other online tutorials.
One site I can highly recommend is :- http://thenewboston.org/list.php?cat=11
They have 200 php tutorial videos, all very well presented.

Thank you Mac I will do in future.
Thank you Suzan, Yes it was the curly bracket. I had put it at the end of the php code instead of at the end of the line of code.
Have a great day all.

Hi everyone
Question on:- Checking if the Submit Button of a HTML Form was Clicked.
Everything is working fine until I add the if (isset($_POST['Submit'])) { } code.
The code below this line does not get executed and I cannot see why. The code is below:
<html>
<head>
<title>A BASIC HTML FORM</title>
<?PHP
if(isset($_POST['Submit'])){

Hi Sipho
That operator is mentioned along with !==
These are mentioned on the last page of section 3 under the operator Precedence list. as follows:
The only operators you haven't yet met on the list above are the = = = and != = operators.
In recent editions of PHP, two new operators have been introduced: the triple equals sign ( = = =) and an exclamation, double equals ( != =). Thes

I have gone back and re-studied this section. Programing is completly new to me, so I will still have to refer back to this section, but second time around I feel I have a better grasp of the parenthasis and operator precedence.

Hi Murray
I am really only studying at night too. The tutorial letter mentioned that we should give ourselves a month and a half before we start working on the assignment. That could be seen as 2 chapters per week or one chapter per week and start on the assignment half way through the course. Perhaps Prof Mac could suggest the best way to approach this?

I bought the text book before the tutorial letter was up, I wasnt aware of Intersoft so I bought it from Juta, as there is a store near me in Linden. I paid R570.00. Intersoft sounds the cheapest.

Hi Thwali
Open the tutorial folder on the CD. Go to the html file called PHP. That will open the index page and just start working through from there. Don't stress about me being on section 4, it is all pretty much smooth sailing until forms.

Hi there Ericche
No, I don't have any previous knowledge of PHP. I registered as early as I could for this course and received my course CD a few weeks ago. I have been working through the tutorial and am on section 4 now.
