However, I see you are doing 3 3rd level COS modules but should still be accepted for honours COS at UNISA, as stated in their honours brochure.
Re: Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude??

i have 4 out of the list of min 3 required for COS :
COS301 - 75%
COS311 - 50%
COS321 - 55%
COS361 - 60%

If i calculate the average of these 4(which i have completed), i get 60% exactly smile

As it look Shaun, can i qualify?

lol, exactly 60% should definitily get you into honours at UNISA.

smile Luck has been my middle name this year...!

When are you doing Honors?

In 2009 if I hopefully pass all next year. Will be INF honours though. When are you doing your honours.
Re: Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude??
December 05, 2007 02:42PM
2009 as well...guess we'll be doing it together...

Next year i have only INF subjects, and I want to try and pass well to get admittance to Honors IS as well...many people are saying that it's easier...but i'd rather give myself the choice. What is your other major if it's not CS?

Also now that i only have 4 COS modules, what are the pre-req's for Honors subjects? like COS401 is the pre-req COS301?? smile
avatar Re: Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude??
December 05, 2007 02:51PM
There isn't really a pre-requisite, only "assumed backgrond knowledge". Basically you can do whichever subject you like.

You can major in either COS or INF honours, not both unfortunately.

I'm doing the IT management stream so when I get my degree it will say major in COS and INF. However, I have 4 INF, 2 COS, and 2 MNG modules. So I cant do COS honours, just a few honours COS modules.

Looking forward to doing honours with you as a fellow student smile

Lol, Ilan I am going to beg. I'm gonna irritate them this year for special administration to two 3rd level COS modules and drop the MNG modules. I'm prepared to do the pre-requisite at the same time as well.

If it goes my way then I won't have to get bored anymore smile

Great news smile i'm happy to hear that there are no pre-requisites for Honors...
Why don't you take another 2 COS modules and then we can take honors together smile 2 brains are better than 1 smile LOL smile
Do 2 easy one's...
Re: Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude??

Shaun i have begged them to do pre-req and the final year module together, and then plain refused me. i even emailed the head of the school of computing and he said no as well....i always thought they should let us do pre-req together with 3rd levels, and if we fail we only have ourselves to blame.. smile But they told me it's a department rule...

Which subjects and whic pre-req were you thinking of?
avatar Re: Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude??
December 05, 2007 03:30PM
I was thinking of doing COS351 & 361. Those are the two that I have only COS261 as a pre-req to do. I even tried registering for COS261 this year for NDP but my application was rejected. By then I it was too late and I wasn't feeling for a fight.

Anyway, yes it would be nice to learn from each other. Seems like I won't have much luck either if they already refused you Niri. Gonna use the "UNISA rejected my application for COS261" as leverage lol.

Oh btw, Niri who did you ask for the pre-req permission? Anyone else did this kind of thing before? Pointers(no not the ones used in programming lanuages grinning smiley), tips, advice, anything...

Shaun please explain this pre-req subjects for Honors and the major subjects. I'm doing ITM and will be registering for third level which include 4 INF modules & 2 MNG which are all compulsory , but I do not understand which ones are the major subjects and which ones are not & they mention refer to your information brochure (which I think is the calender) and I have tried to go through and cannot see where they mention that.

Also for one to do Honors don't they just need you to have your BSc degree?

Thanx in advance hot smiley

Okay...

There are two different majors that are offered for honours, COS and INF.
To do COS honours you need at least 3 COS at 3rd level done in your BSc. The same applies for INF.

If you do 4 3rd level COS subjects in your BSc then you are majoring in COS. If you also have 4 3rd level INF subjects in your BSc then you are majoring in both COS and INF.

Since we are doing ITM which is a specialised stream, we will have the title: ITM Computer Science and Information Systems. However, this does not mean we actually major in both.

There are no pre-reqs for honours, just "assumed background knowledge". So simply put, you can do any honours INF module (same for COS if you are majoring in COS) you like.

To do honours you need an average of 60% in 4 of your major subjects.

Shew, I hope I explained everything properly but if you need clarification, let me know.

See you'll tomorrow...

Shaun, i asked about 3 faculty member, the head of dept and the head of the module i was short on...they all said no (in writing smile ) i still have the emails i will send them to you in the morning...

Also i complained on Hellopeter.com begging to do it(so pathetic) and that didn't work too...just got another no smile

That's how come next year is my last i broke my remaining modules evenly to make it easier for myself...

Good explanation of the requirements for Honors, you should teach the call centre people smile LOL

Don't want to contradict anyone, but...
According to this year's guidelines for Postgraduate studies in:
http://www.osprey.unisa.ac.za/computingpostgrad-2007.pdf
On page 8/9/10 it states:
You must hold a Bachelor's degree.
You must hold a major in either CS or IS.
For CS: at least 3 of following subjects are required: Cos301, Cos311, Cos321, Cos340, Cos351, Cos361.
For IS: Inf303 and Inf305 plus one of: Inf306/Cos226, Inf308, Inf320, Cos311
Average of 60% for final yr major = direct admission, 55-60% = provisional admission.
Your avg % must be calculated on your combination of the 3 subjects as listed above.
The rules would probably be similar for next year.

Hi Reanie

I saw this in the pdf document as well a few weeks ago, that's why i got happy because when i calculate the % of the 3 modules only i get 65%. Then i saw posting that they take 4 or 5 of your majors in to the calculation, and that's when i got worried. I email 3 postgrad lecturers yesterday and i'm hoping they can clarify.
avatar Re: Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude??
December 06, 2007 08:18AM
LOL, thanks Niri. Reanie is correct. I think its best to consult the brochure for accurate info.

Agh, I can't understand why they won't allow us to do a few subjects and the pre-req at the same time. I mean, if we fail any of the subjects then we are to blame. We are university students and so we are (hopefully) responsible for our studies.

Well never mind, I can always learn what's in the COS modules, myself. Would be better to learn it in a more structured way though.
Re: Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude??
December 06, 2007 08:49AM
Shaun, i think so too. WE are responsible students and it's our money to waste...but i guess they have rules. If you need any COS info, let me know.

December 06, 2007 09:46AM
Thanks Niri. Btw, did you select your own curriculum?
Re: Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude??
December 06, 2007 11:06AM
Initially i did. The brochure said that you didn't HAVE to follow a stream, so i chose Computer Science and Maths as majors. Then halfway i had to switch to the Software Engineering stream. Thank God i only ended up with 2 extra courses that don't count towards my degree...it could have been worse and i could have only realised now...Which subjects are you doing?
avatar Re: Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude??
December 06, 2007 11:14AM
I'm doing the IT management stream. If I follow it then I have to do MNG 301& 302, AUI 202, DPA 202, and COS311 (YAY!).
Re: Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude??
December 06, 2007 11:29AM
Those sound interesting...are they difficult?
avatar Re: Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude??
December 06, 2007 11:46AM
They are okay if you like management. I enjoy some of them but I know I'm not the management type. Accounting is horror. I've heard the same about AUI.

I guess if I do end up with all the management subjects complete, I could become a BA like Riaan and earn lotsa money smile
avatar Re: Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude??
December 06, 2007 12:06PM
hehehe, dont really know what to say to that!

Accounting is a bitch yes, thats why I switched to economics, more for the analytical thinkers than accounting. And in the job market it adds just as much value, especially in the investment industry. Accounting looks at trees, economics looks at forests smiling smiley

AUI is really not that bad, just boring monkey stuff....just requires you to memorise lots of stuff, very little to understand.

75%-79% is Cum Laude,
80%-89% is Summa Cum Laude,
90%-100% is Mucmma Cum Laude

Bot in south africa it isnt smiling smiley

75 - 100% = cum laude, also called "passed with distinction" at places like UNISA...
