I think it is above 60% average for 6 third year modules, which is your major....

They up the requirement for masters, I needed to get above 65% average....

they take your 5 or 6 highest marks for your 3rd year subjects and thats how they calculate if you get above 60% or not smiling smiley

Are you sure celene? I majored in ECS and INF with undergrad. For me to qualify for a honours in INF, I had to get above 60% for INF subjects.....my ECS was not considered to add to the score?

nah... for my stuff it looks like they took the highest 5 or 6 marks. If they just took my cos marks I would not have got 60%. My inf subjects are what pushed my average up. and I am doing a cos honours

But there are some INF subjects that are the same as COS subjects, maybe those credits were transferable? Anyway, I am glad you got admission for honours, it really catapults you to a next level! Well worth the effort!

such as?

hehehe, lots of benefits. You feel that you have a better grasp of the processes. Undergrad is really an introduction....then you get to gain an in depth understanding in a more specialised setup...

Did I mention the financial benefits smiling smiley

not sure of the 3rd year ones....but for honours it was INF462, INF412 (I think), and INF482 (I think....it is formal specification techniques?)

yeah.. cos462 = inf412. I don't know what the others are. but those credits aren't transferable.. why would they be transferable anyhow?

Hello,

What is the honours workload like per module, compared to 3rd year level?
avatar Re: Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude??
November 23, 2007 11:08AM
For instance, INF462 is exactly the same as cos462 (that research techniques course)....surely they are interchangeable?
Re: Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude??
November 23, 2007 11:15AM
I'm preparing for honours next year, and calenders say that 462 is required before continuing to 412, I'm really not sure about COS.

INF462T : Research for Computing (Information Systems
then
INF412H : Project Module

You guys are doing Honours already, what the workload like compared to INF300's, so I have a rough idea: is it more work or just more difficult?
avatar Re: Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude??
November 23, 2007 11:22AM
I did 462 and 412 in the same year, I had to get special permission though, so it is possible. Honours require allot more time than 3rd year....you have to guide yourself through it, no hand holding smiling smiley

cos462 and inf462 - if you do a cos honours they want you to do the cos subject. anyhow, to get honours in a specific subjetc I think you need 8 (or is it 6) out of the 10 modules to be proper cos or proper inf subjects. they do want you to do the compulsory research module before you do your actual project but you can ask them to do it in the same year.

there is more work, you get one tut letter and if you are lucky the lecturers will respond to any queries before november.. some subjects I am only now getting assignment 1 solutions. also, you will often get an exam letter saying "Learn everything. you will aslo not receive past papers. the end"

November 23, 2007 11:46AM
Okay, I'll most probably do it sequentially as I've got two years anyway, hopefully, I might as well use it. A lot more work, time, effort and no hand holding. Sounds like a good time...

What sort of projects are there to work on or do you have too create your own?
avatar Re: Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude??

Some allows you to define your own topic within certain parameters, and then there are some that they define for you....My topic was shitty. I chose my own topic, "project manager for iterative and incrementeal approaches" It was sooo hard to find any empirical evidence, was not a good choice.

there is a list that becomes available in december - cos498 or inf412 - you can choose which topic you want to do a project on.

Thank Celene, its got me thinking ahead already.

What project did you work on?

Another thing: what is your opinion on the value of these options ~
1) INF BCOM honours -> Mcom -> ?
and / or
2) 2nd degree BSC(itm) (only 12 modules, if I get credit from BCom (inf)) -> Hons
avatar Re: Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude??
November 23, 2007 02:26PM
PS: jsut for interest sake, you can go from BCom to Hon BSc. I did that, as they dont have a MCom in INF....
avatar Re: Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude??
November 23, 2007 02:28PM
This was my route:

BCom (Majors Economics and INF)
...
Hons BSc (INF)
...
MSc (busy with)
...
PHd (hopefully start before 2010) smiling smiley

My project is/was (just have to hand in final copy) Mobile agents and grid computing. but there are about 30 projects you can choose from and most of them can have more than 1 student workign on them.

you can go from a bcom undergrad to a inf honours. I know I went and redid a bsc because my first bsc had bugger all to do with anything IT related.

Thats sounds quite interesting, similar to the boinc project?

I am really glad about hearing this, I'd rather do 10 post grad inf modules than have to suffer through 2 more management papers, to be honest...

I don't know about being a breeze; but I do know, doing something you enjoy makes things much more pleasant, I also find we tend to get out what we put in...

Riaan, I just read some your paper - Assessment of a Framework to Compare Software
Development Methodologies; I am seriously impressed.

Is it your thesis or dissertation for MSc?
avatar Re: Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude??

Cameron, thank you so much spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Not dissertation no, but it does fit in with it, The paper outlines a framework that was used to choose URDAD as our methodology of choice. My dissertation is an assessment of URDAD, to see if it lives up to the requirements of model driven development etc.

Part of my requirements for my Masters is that I submit at least 2 papers to reputable publishers. I am busy, together with the originator of URDAD, to work on two papers that we want to submit to IEEE.

I was actually a little disappointed with this paper, I literally did it in one weekend, I kept on procrastinating right to the end smiling smiley

PS: my dissertation would be between 150 and 200 pages....ouch!

Hey Guys

Sorry to bring this up again, but i just called Unisa querying req's for admission to honors CS and IS, and can you believe that 2 people actually told me it's only a degree and no subject % pre-req!! i can't believe the call centre is continuously wrong...so i complained on hellopeter.com about them smile hehee

But this is what i wanted to know, i've been following the discussions about honors and my path is as follows: even though there are 33 subjects, 2 are not part of the IS stream and i'm taking an extra one next year to make sure that i graduate....but looking at my curriculum, which modules must i get >60% to qualify for Honors in IS? Any 4 3rd level IS modules averaging above 60%. Or the same for COS if you want to do COS honours.
