Re: OOP - 10 years ago

Notepad++ is ok, but I came across an IDE that makes PHP development so much easier. Have a look at NuSphere I downloaded the trail version and after a couple of days they contact you regarding if you like their program. I told them yes, but that it was very expensive and that I am currently studying PHP. Instantly they sent me a voucher and I got the software a student pricing. I

Heheheheh!! Well that is the million dollar question.
I think it is just M$ who is a bit limited in their view in what people want. They want to force you into a certain direction, while there is so much more out there. Take for instance their support for CSS3 and HTML5, IE is having severe trouble with it's implementation, while Chrome and Firefox is way ahead.

The site looks good. Just have a look at the contact page. On Chrome the textboxes are not aligned. Also a big NO NO!! (according to me) is redirecting a client because they do not use Firefox or Chrome. You maybe sending potential customers away because they are using Internet Explorer.

Thanks Prof Mac. I know it's the same with our college, trying to get something changed, only ends up in one drink a bit more.

It looks good. I will try that some time. Shows you how many possibilities there are in programming.

I also see no connection to the database.
Just an idea. Try and get your user input from the from into an array and then send this array to a function that will update the database.

This is how my $CourseA variable gets it's value.
Language: PHP//Check to see what was selected in dropdown boxes
if (isset($_POST[';selCourse';])) {
$CourseA = $_POST[';selCourse';];
}
selCourse is my dropdown box.

This is how I did mine. Hope it helps:
Language: PHP//Inserts student data into database
conDB();
$sql = "INSERT INTO student (sname,init,fname,title,msname,dob,gen,lang,idno,telh,telw,cel,fax,email,address,contact_flag)
VALUES (';$studSn';,';$studIn';,';$studFn';,';$studTit';,';$studMn';,';$studDob';,';$studGen';,';$studLan';,';$studId';,

The CSS3 is fine, just keep the JS to a minimum as this is a PHP course.

Thanks!! That would not have been possible without this course. Now it is like everyday you learn something new in PHP.
Prof Mac, any chances of an Advanced PHP course in the future somewhere??

We have a student administrator that takes care of creating and deleting of courses. Usually a course does not get deleted, it just gets flagged as not being presented any more. In live systems there is always finances and a history of enrolments that is in some way linked to a course. Just deleting a course may result in broken links in the finance and history modules.

Not sure about this part. Did you check if there is no data in the database. Use phpMyAdmin and browse the table if any data is in it. From the code below you are using an if.. else. What should if($result) be?? Should it be true, false, 1 or 0?? Should be something like:
Language: PHPif ($result = true) {
echo "Student successfully registered";
}
else {

The course_man page is just for keeping details of all your courses. So when you add and delete courses this happens on this page and this will also affect the database connected to the fields that you need to provide.
The course_student table holds all your registration information.

This is a project I am working on currently for my college. This was all made possible by doing this course.
Bookshop
The app was created for Chrome (other browsers may have some difficulty). If Chrome moans about this being a phising site, just ignore. I think the free webserver I am using doesn't have a great reputation. I made use of HTML5 and CSS3. Also using mySQLi to conne

Cool. Good Luck with the deadline. I know how it feels, got near mine and there was still so much that I wanted to change, but kept on breaking stuff that worked.

This can be possible. If you were to code your course page in such a way, say for instance, you include a checkbox at the top that will give you an option to show the course with the student registered for it when it is ticked. This will give you a display of :
CourseA

Inconsistent?? If you query the same student the same time after one another is the result then inconsistent? What are you getting?
The Yes/NO message box is possible with JavaScript, but rather not put that into this course.

This is a good idea. You can use an if else statement to display a different menu system for the currently logged in user.

In doing this course I had a bit of an unfair advantage. I work as an IT Support Officer for a college. We currently employ a very large system by the name of ITS. This is written in JAVA and all data is stored in an Oracle database. This thing is huge. In supporting this I have taken some of the features in our live system and employed that in my webapp for this course.
Why would you fir

The filter_var() works great. A function that I make use of a lot to clean user input is this one:
Language: PHPfunction txtValidate($Validated){
filter_var($Validated,FILTER_SANITIZE_SPECIAL_CHARS);
filter_var($Validated,FILTER_SANITIZE_MAGIC_QUOTES);
filter_var($Validated,FILTER_VALIDATE_EMAIL);
filter_var($Validated,FILTER_SANITIZE_EMAIL)

I have built in a fail-safe in my course_man page. No course may be deleted without deleting all the students registered for that course first. This prevent courses being deleted while there are still students registered for it.

I would also rather assign the the values that you get from $_POST to variables and then use that in your SQL query. Something like this:
Language: PHP$sql = "INSERT INTO student (sname,init,fname,title,msname,dob,gen,lang,idno,telh,telw,cel,fax,email,address,contact_flag)
VALUES (';$studSn';,';$studIn';,';$studFn';,';$studTit';,';$studMn';,';$studDob';,';$studGen';,';$studLan';,';$s

Where are you doing checks to prevent SQL injection? Remember you can not trust the input from the user.

@Sipho. Agree with you. Linux is one of the best OS's for almost anything. It takes some time getting around, but luckily Google is everyone's best friend. I have 2 Linux proxy's on my network providing internet access to +/- 900 students. What is so nice about them is that I can log or block just about everything that everyone does on the proxy. No where do you find free sof

Rather put the config.php and function.php in the same folder. Be it include or includes. The app will still work if it is in different folders, you then have to put this at the top of each page:
Language: PHPinclude ("includes/config.php");
include ("include/func.php");
So it is much better to have it like this:
Language: PHPrequire ("includ

There is a way to use a drop down box, with all the courses in it. Give it a try and I can help you where you get stuck.

You may want to have a look at installing EasyPHP in another directory rather than C:\Program Files for instance rather C:\EasyPHP. Some permissions on the Program Files folder cause weird problems.
I used XAMPP because of some weird things happening in EasyPHP.

Your query should be:
Language: PHP$name = $_POST[';sname';];
$SQL = "INSERT INTO student(sname) VALUES (';$name';)";
You'll see I have changed the variable receiving the value to something else. From practise I have learned that if you have to many variables with the same name, and it comes to debugging time then, you have a horrible time trying to track down
