Website upload refresh
October 04, 2013 07:08PM
Will it be possible to give a quick refresher on how to upload our site to the server for the assignment?
Re: Website upload refresh

Do we need to delete our last assignment or how do you start a new one?

Delete the old files.
Any files with the same name will in any event be overwritten.

You don't "start a new one", you just upload your files into the appropriate directory.

How do i do that? And will i be using the same url as the first task?

Same url - not sure what the rest of your question is.

Delete all the old files, and then upload the new files to the same url / directories.

Use an FTP client such as FileZilla.

Some ISPs have an FTP client available on the CPanel.

I dont know what you are saying.. so i should not do it on http://orgfree.freewebhostingarea.com/ftp/index.php like the index assignment?

That is an FTP client provided by the ISP, which you can use to upload your files.

Basically, do the same as you did with the assignment.

FTP = File Transfer Protocol.

FileZilla is a free open source program that you can use to upload files.

The url is the place where you upload your files.
It makes no difference how you upload the files, or what program you use.

Start by having a look at these tutorials -

I need to enter a host and a port to be able to connect and i dont know what that is..

Have you looked at the tutorial ?

The host is where your website is located.

You don't have to enter anything for the port - it uses a default value.

Where is that? Everybody should have the same one? or is it the milnaylouw.freeoda.com one? i have tried so many combinations but its not working

Its the same url where you previously uploaded your files.

ie: The website location that you created at your ISP, the place where you want to HOST your files.

You need to use the same username and password that you used previously.
Re: Website upload refresh

well it says the host must be http://6te.freewebhostingarea.com/. but u are not allowed to put http. So its not working. Dont you know what should go there exactly? It should be the same for everybody right?
avatar Re: Website upload refresh
October 07, 2013 10:24PM
No, its NOT the same for everybody.

Its YOUR website, which you want to HOST in YOUR domain.

You upload the files to the domain name that you created.

HOST is the place you want to upload your files to.

What did you enter into a browser to display your assignment ? That is HOST.
Re: Website upload refresh

http://milnaylouw.freeoda.com/

but i deleted my other files as u said so it doesnt show there anymore. is that one correct?
avatar Re: Website upload refresh
October 07, 2013 11:39PM
Deleting your files does not remove the domain / directory.
It just means that the directory is empty, but it is still there.

HOST should be -

milnaylouw.freeoda.com

or possibly -

ftp.milnaylouw.freeoda.com

Local Site - Navigate to the folder / directory where you saved all your project files. You do not have to create anything.
You will see all your files listed.

Remote Site - Navigate to either "public_HTML" or "www". They are the same directory.
You must put your files, particularly the index file, there or your site will not auto-run.

You only have to create sub-directories if you have sub-directories in your project - eg: images.

Should the file be names index? mine is home at this stage, will i need to change everything now? i cant access the desktop from the local site, that is where everything is.
avatar Re: Website upload refresh
October 09, 2013 08:47AM
You MUST have a file named index.??? (.html, .php, .asp etc).
The website will not auto-load without it.

You shouldn't store files on the desktop. Create an appropriate project directory to save your files in.

I have a home page (home.html) so i need to change everything to index.html and replace the home?

I do have a folder with all my things in that is on the desktop. That not right?
