Hi,

I wanted to know if there was a subminimum rule for this module but you can ignore me. Wish I could delete this post completely smile

Wow that's crazy.
If I were you I'll just try for 50% to be safe.
If you have problems we all know what a pain it is to contact UNISA.

Yeah I'm going to try for a higher mark, it will keep my average up and it will help with my application for MSc if i get there.

I'll be registering for this one this year.
What research area are you interested in for your MSc?

The year mark counts for 40% of the final mark, so its a 60% examination.

Subminimum= [50-(0.4xyear mark)]/0.6

He already mentioned all this in his initial post, together
with the percentage (19%) he requires to pass the exam.
He was wondering if 19% would be fine or is there a
so-called sub-minimum required.

He edited the post smile
And now he wish he could delete the post .. hehe ... grinning smiley

I guess the submit min for this module is also 40%. Most of the modules is working with that figure. So if you obtained 39% for the exam, and you have an impressive 75% year mark, then you are so in trouble, as the yearmark cannot be taken into account then. That is so bad.

Thanks for the replies.

@Cherokee: apologies for editing the initial post and confusing everyone. I haven't decided on a MSc topic yet. I'm doing 7 modules, so no point in counting my chickens before they hatch.

@Scag: Just to clarify, the difference between minimum and subminimum

Assume a 100% year mark and no subminimum rule.
Then the minimum mark required in the exam is given by your formula: [ 50- (0.4*100) ] / 0.6 = 16.67%
16.67 is required in the exam to pass as no subminum rule applies.

Now assume a 100% year mark and a 40% subminimum rule:
Then if the student gets 16.67% he will still fail as follows:
Year Mark 100 % Exam Mark 16.67 % Final Mark 50%
Failed Subminimum of 40% not met in Exam Paper

I will assume Ivan's 40% is correct and proceed, but definitely I'll be aiming for a substantially higher mark than 40 to keep the average high as well as make sure I don't fail because I was aiming too low.

I hope my 40% is rigth, because if you obtain a exam mark between the submin and 50% you get a sup. But in honours you don't get sups, so I wonder if there is really a submin of below 50%. I'm too lazy to look it up grinning smiley

@Lloyd no problem smile
I'm interested in either HCI or Information Security but I'm also still busy with Honours and who knows my
decisions may change in future.

I also think Ivan's reasoning sounds fair.

@Ivan ... they've started offering supps for Honours as from this year; supps will be written in May/June.

@Cherokee. I saw the notice regarding supps. That is great! To wait for a year to try again is really not lekka. angry smiley
I have written only a handful of sups in my life, and I have passed them all. Everytime when you go through your work the second time, thoroughly at least, you are really starting to get it. Like COS405, and COS408 last year. Failed both of them, but would definitely have passed them on the sup. Well, at least for now, I will get my change in the next few days. What a wait! spinning smiley sticking its tongue out
