Bored while you are waiting for your study material?

Some of you registered during the last two weeks and will only receive your study material during the next two weeks or so. Do not worry about the dates for the first two assignments - once you have received it contact Christa (prinscj@unisa.ac.za) and explain that you will only now start doing the first and the pre-assignment.

To check when your study material had been posted please contact Elmari at:
El-mari Havenga:
Tel: (012) 429 6089
Fax: (012) 429 6771
havene@unisa.ac.za

Meanwhile you can access the online material by using:
login: super
password: duper if required

It is a good idea to download the three sets of exercises from the All downloads (resources menu) on the course home page and do them (start with webtutor) while you are waiting

"Remember that there is another set of exercises (i.e. additional to the Masterskill lessons) for HTML, CSS and JavaScript the downloads. Look for the files javascripttutor.zip, cssprimer.zip, and webtutor.zip. Unzip them and start the lessons by opening the index.htm(l) file"

You can look here for older but still useful additional material: http://cs-cert.unisa.ac.za/internet/webdesign/index.htm
such as the two Javascript resources http://cs-cert.unisa.ac.za/internet/resources/netscapedocs/guide/contents.htm, the Web Design primer http://cs-cert.unisa.ac.za/internet/resources/webdesign/index.htm and the HTML primer http://cs-cert.unisa.ac.za/internet/resources/html1/barebone.html and http://cs-cert.unisa.ac.za/internet/resources/yale/contents.html and the Graphics primer http://cs-cert.unisa.ac.za/internet/resources/webgraphics101/webgraphics101.html

I also work on a Mac, you can use TextEdit or you can download Bean at: http://www.bean-osx.com/

I'm also eagerly waiting my registration forms which I was told would be sent in the post after applying online..

Any explanations, anybody?

There are certain things that you can do on a Mac

For example the HTML, CSS and JavaScript exercises are also here as zip files which you can extract directly with StuffIt (i.e. you do not need to run an exe file on a windows pc):

http://cs-cert.unisa.ac.za/internet/research/HTML.zip
http://cs-cert.unisa.ac.za/internet/research/CSS.zip
http://cs-cert.unisa.ac.za/internet/research/JSCode.zip

For the PaintShop Pro exercises you can use Photoshop on the Mac

You can use Firefox or Safari instead of Internet Explorer

You will have to find out what FTP client you can use on the Mac

Adobe Flash?

I will eventually be using flash, but for the webtutor exercises that i'm doing in the meantime, is there a way to not use times new without having to change the font, i don't know if this makes sense to anyone. To make an example, when i'm designing a banner, short of supplying the printer's with the font files( because you never know whether the printers have it or not) it is much easier for all to create vector shapes from all the display fonts thus ensuring that your design isn't screwed by a pitiful looking replacement font. Does this make more sense ?

Its been about two weeks since i contacted Elmarie without any response as to whether my study has been dispatched. Should i be concerned ? I can understand that it gets hecticly busy, but no response at all. The number on the email either rings forever or more often than not is engaged. Who else can i speak to regarding my study material.
