No Calculator + Decision Tree's
October 31, 2010 09:37PM
Hey all,

I am quite concerned in regards to the "No Calculator" rule in the exam coming up. Looking at the past paper, the table given at the end gives absolutely no indication of the entropy, or the other log functions for that matter, only the information gain.

Do we just need to work out the logs in our heads? Anyone got an idea?

Cheers,

Kyle

Kyle,

As I understood it, I think you look up the p. so if the fraction in the log is e,g, 1/4 you look up .25 in the table and get the answer without those tricksy logs.

Even still, when you have fractions like 4/14 times 0.98? I can't do that in my head even without the pressure of an exam going on. I'm taking my calculator and asking the invigilators when I get there...

Yelloa,

Got a response from our lecturers here:

Good day,

Please read response from Prof Etienne van der Poel, also in charge of this module: "I've checked the October paper. I don’t see a need for a calculator in the Oct paper".

So is it safe to assume that we won't get any decision trees?
Would be quite a bummer as decision trees are fairly easy...

I wouldn't assume anything. At most I'm assuming they give us simple fractions.

From the Prof's "I've checked the October paper. I don’t see a need for a calculator in the Oct paper".

This probably means the fractions are easy to work with, i.e. the prof will not need a calculator

anyway, crap like 3/14 * (0.95) = ??? is still messy, I've practice these... but too easy to make mistakes.

As long as the fraction is a multiple of 10 or something simple like that, I't'd be ok:

Quote

= 3/10 * 0.98
= 3/10 * 98/100
= 294/1000
= 0.294

That kind of thing.
