Study Guide pg 31, Step 3 ?
August 16, 2010 08:34PM
Can anyone make sense of Step 3 in the study guide on page 31?

k2 > 2K + 1
Now:
(k + 1)2 = k2 + 2k + 1 // OK the FOIL method against next term of LHS
                            > (2k + 1) + 2k + 1 // OK the next term in the sequence of RHS
                            = 2k + 2 + 2k // um, simplifying RHS but, what happened to LHS?
                            = 2(k + 1) + 2k // um, more simplifying RHS ... I think coz I don't see a power of 2.
                            > 2(k + 1) + 1 // stumped! I don't know where this comes from...

We have(I'm writing it in one line):

(k + 1)2 = k2 + 2k + 1 > (2k+1) +2k +1 = 2k + 2+ 2k = 2(k+1) + 2k

thus we know:

(k + 1)2 > 2(k+1) + 2k

So thus we can say:

(k + 1)2 > 2(k + 1) + 1

Because we know 2(k+1) + 2k > 2(k + 1) + 1, so 2(k + 1) + 1 will still be smaller then (k + 1)2:

(k + 1)2 > 2(k + 1) + 1

Are you studing full-time? Why don't you get some old exam papers? It will give you some idea of what to expect.

Hi

Randal Flag two weeks is enough if you work for it! Use the Unisa study guide as your main source and remember to work through the extra exercises and recommend exercises. The solutions for both is in the back of the study guide.

I actually took of Friday a couple of weeks ago to go into Unisa and attend that exam lecture and by the looks of it if you can write down the theory of how to solve the problem you will get enough marks to pass.

Also take BlaXpydo advice and download the 4 exams on the myUnisa website to get a feel for the exam!

And finally if you don't understand ask on this forum I will try to help where I can and also remember you can contact the lecture during business hours!

Good luck,
