So who has tried it? Just installed it on my netbook.

http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org/

Going to use it to write an application for my wife. As I've installed Ubuntu (will switch to Arch Linux soon) on her work PC, Delphi is out of the question but at least with Lazarus I can use my Delphi knowledge to write once run everywhere thumbs up

Heck, even the IDE looks 100% like Delphi 7.

(I'm tempted to see how similar the two are as you can import Delphi Code into Lazarus. Will help students that cannot afford Delphi but do not want to pirate - go FOSS)

Thank you very much for the find. This is great news indeed. smileys with beer

I'm venturing into designing a UI program, Licensing was a nightmare, that'll pull customizable reports from the DB of the program we use at work.
And when that happens, a 50% increase is but a demonstration away! thumbs up smiley

Just did assignment 2, question 2 in Lazarus and perfect. No problems with syntax or anything else - a true clone of Delphi.

Compiled and ran on my Netbook using Arch Linux, and best of all the compiled app (the one done under Arch) ran on my Ubuntu without having to recompile.

Actually going to write a funky app this weekend with Lazarus for a little work project.

And from the data control and data access tabs, there is database access as well. Correct?

I wander if UNISA will accept this as a replacement of the Delphi platform?

Well I doubt they will see the difference as UI is the same.

For the next delphi module I'll wait and see. I've Delphi7 personal edition which dose not have the database features and that will become a problem next semester when I do the 2nd level Delphi module. Would be nice if we could use this as an alternative.

@cbrunsdonza
Are you referring to INF2611? I think this is the first year it is being done.

Yes, could not remember the module number and was too lazy to look it up. Did download the courseware and will give old Lazarus a try to see if its 100% up to scratch. Trying to save bucks this year ... R700 is a bit ouch for software that I will anyway chuck.
