5 Year Mark
As explained in COSALLF Tut Letter 301, assignments are used to determine a year mark. In COS340A the year mark will count 25% of your final mark. (The examination will count 75% of your final mark.). As you can see this is a significant contribution towards yoru final mark. The weights for the contribution of assignments to your year mark are as follows:
- Assignment 01: 0%
- Assignment 02: 50%
- Assignmetn 03: 50%

2nd thoughts how would this work? If you get a 100% for your assignments, then you have 25% before even writing the exam? So if you get 50% for the exam you will actually fail, you will need to get 75% to pass the exam?

The way I ready this is 100 = 75 + 25, thus exam is out of 75, you get 50% in exam and a 100% year mark - your final mark will be 37.5 + 25 = 62.5 - looks like a pass to me. On the other hand if you get 0 for your year mark you need 66.67% in the exam to get 50% pass - the tut letter says no-one got this right last year....

I know some of the people have finished the practical, but it's not an easy one to do. Felt like the prev 2 year's one's was easier (this is my 3rd year - exams bugger me everytime).

But, seeing as the exams always make me struggle, I might have a better chance to pass this year (which I must).

I haven't started on assignment 2 as yet. Or 301 assignment 3.
Still, it is good that they are giving more to the practical side of the course instead of exams - under the stress you need to be a good exam taker to do well. More marks up for grabs in the assignments - they can test it you have mastered the work.

So if you get 100% for your year mark and only get 40% for your exam it is still a pass?

i.e. 25(year mark) + 30(exam) = 55% for your total mark

I think you need to get a minimum of 50% for the exam but I'm not sure where it's mentioned. This is a separate requirement in addition to the minimum year mark needed to pass.

For those that are curious I asked the lecturer. The reply was that 40% is the subminimum, assuming you have 100% for your year end mark.
