Academic exclusion
December 08, 2009 02:19PM
I read about academic exclusion and I have two questions:
1 Does it apply now in 2009 or its going to start in 2010??
2 What happens next if one gets excluded??? Is it a goodbye from the varsity or will UNISA show some mercy after a while??

Please help answer this whoever knows well

Honestly speaking, am worried cos do not know how many modules i am gonna pass!!!!

UNISA sent me 2 books ..the exam timetable(all modules) for 2010 and a book entitled
"Your registration @ Unisa" ( pg18 ..refers to the academic exclusion on the basis of poor academic achievement)

Academic exclusion is present in all other universities, I am surprised it took Unisa so long to include exclusion rules in their constitution. To be honest, if you cant manage to pass 2 or 3 year subjects in a year, you are wasting your money and the governments money. I guess if you break your degree up into many years, you should structure easier subjects to be written with harder subjects.

You will have more than one shot though. You will get a warning, then an exclusion (which can be appealed).

I had a look in the calendars and this exclusion rule appears in both the 2010 and the 2009 calendars but not in the 2008 one. You can find it in, Part 1 Section D.

Part 1, 2010
Part 1, 2009
Part 1, 2008

So in other words if you're in say second year - you have to pass at least 3 year modules?

That's quite true. I know that in most universities, if you fail the same module twice, you're out. Also, if you fail one year of your course, and then later manage to pass, and then later fail another year, then you're out.
I am happy that UNISA's rules are different.
Maybe whoever may be concerned about academic exclusion should enquire further. There must be other conditions stated somewhere.

Unfortunately, I know from experience :'(
I failed engineering maths 1, then passed it, as well as maths 2. Then failed analogue electronics and maths 3 and got given the boot.
