Textbook Useless

Anybody else out there feel the textbook is completely useless. I am trying to do assignment 2 and find that the textbook doesnt even bother explaining anything. Might as well not have it as far as I am concerned

I have to disagree, so far I have found this text book very very good.
However I have not started assignment 2; but based on prior experience I expect to enjoy the reading.

the textbook is not useless, you have to read earlier chapters and definitions; that is why the lecturers said that you have to do this.

you have to spend time on this module; you also have to do some research (on the internet, for example); this is a major topic in CS: but be carefull not to get involved in too much information that's not relevant to this module; once I put in the time, i realised that assignment 2 is actually very do-able; I may not have answered all questions correctly, but I worked hard and the solutions will make alot of sense to me (if they give us the solutions on time)

some questions are straight forward, do these ones at least; you have to submit all assignments.

after you put in the effort, you will feel a sense of reward.

...at least it is a short syllabus smile

Thanks for the input guys, guess it is just me.

When they you say read earlier chapters, do you mean earlier ones from this years syllabus or earlier as in earlier in the book.

I found that with assignment 2, for instance the neural net stuff, there was not a single example on how to calculate these things, yet we have to do it for the assignment. I have spend tons of time researching stuff on the web and found this to be much more informative than the text book.

you have to understand the logic behind the equations; you are right, there are no worked examples; that is why you have to understand the equations; read chapters 13 & 14 as well as any other chapters that chapters 20 & 21 reference.

Ok, sounds like my problem is having done COS351 3 years ago. Different text book and so on. Does anybody have the chapters that was prescribed for the previous year. Better start reading there

Yes from last year COS351 used this text book. 452 seems to just carry on where they finished.

You should be able to get the info you are after from the download section in Osprey for 351.

Well this baysesian stuff was not covered last year... I spent hours this weekend staring at the first two pages Chap 20 and still have not yet understood how to work out the data for the graph. sigh. I feel stupid. And I still havent understood it. If anyone has some good web sites which explains the equations plus worked out examples please post.

Ok. Worked it out. see post under subject Bayesian learning,

This is my favourite UNISA textbook by the way. I even had it rebound in a green leather cover.
