Here CPT there is a Protea in Stellenbosch. Not sure if they do academic books though...

What about Juta across the road from Unisa in Parow?

I have only ever managed to get 1 COS book from them (the local one on delphi) Never managed to get any other books from them for COS/INF/MAT. Always out of stock whenver I went and never really interested in getting the books back in stock either.

Yes, I found Juta a huge disappointment too. I don't think that I've ever bought a book from them

How about ordering the books from the alternative sellers section in amazon.co.uk?

I have had good success doing that when the seller is "The Book Depository" - UK based seller - and buying the shop soiled/2nd hand/damaged etc books. I have used them about 5 times and every time they have been quick - 2 weeks via Royal Mail - and they list the contents of the book as printed paper or printed material (with apparently no value) so I never paid any duties on it.thumbs up All the books looked new when I got them (some still plastic wrapped) so not sure how they grade the damage etc.

@Rick - Juta saved me hundreds of bucks on occcasion. Would be nice if they had an online shop.

Kalahari used to have cheaper books (when SA flag icon showed local supplier). This stopped in 2006... I keep a wishlist of stuff I might buy if the price ever becomes reasonable, but see that in the last few days everything has gone up R150+. Add to that apparanlty everything is on sale too at the moment, so next year it will go up another R200!

One of the items is an e-void cd (Shadows,Taximan). I want to order it but its never in stock, and now costs about R400. I've got a R60 voucher, but when the books go for R1500-R2000 there's no way that is enough to bribe anyone to buy off them.

Pricewise loot.co.za isn't much better.

I am speaking under correction, but I think loot.co.za gets most of their international books directly from Amazon and just adds their markup.

oh, sounds like wantitall.co.za. although they are more geared to dvd and entertainment side

Thanks, could not remember who it was. They apparently (if I have the right company here) have a container or two that comes directly from amazon to SA each week.

It was 2 days after they made this public when Amazon USA stopped shipping to South Africa ... coincidence se moer

On a quick derail here, but online shopping is really tricky now. I have seen a 20% price difference between in stock (eg R300) and out-of stock (R360) items (Take2 vs Khalahra).

That would be Protea.

I actually found that 2 out of 5 books were cheaper at Protea vs Van Schaiks. I didn't bother with Juta or Kalahari.
Yeah thanks.
I have also found though that when Protea is cheaper they are cheaper by a large margin(A few hundred rand) when Van Schaiks are cheaper they are usually only cheaper by a small amount(R50 or so) so if I were to only buy at one shop I would have been better off overall at Protea.

I guess this depends largely on which book you buy when though so other peoples experiences may differ. This is also why I always make sure to get quotes from at least 4 places.

Armstrongs Books says they will better the price from other stores.
One book started at R700.00, now at R455.95 spinning smiley sticking its tongue out
I found the cheapest at Adams, then emailed Armstrongs.

Protea gives a price, but no stock. angry smiley

The overseas online stores on this thread are justs as high as Kalahari and Exclusive.

Where can I get a list of 2009 prescribed books before I register? I tried calling the call center and I got a number for the "Prescribed Books" department, who just blew my off syaing I must send them an email. Does anyone know of a contact who can help with titles of prescribed books?

Same thing for me. I sent the email on 12 dec and they didnt respond, so i tried calling them and it was just dead. Yesterday I got through and told them to check their mail, today I have my prescribed books list. Just send them all your subject codes.

A bunch of us actually found van Schaick to be the cheapest for honours books this year

Thanks for the Spitfire. I also noticed that if i repersonalized my page on this site with the subjects for 2009, then under the general info for each module, are the prescribed books for 2009, together with ISBN numbers.

Having said that, I hunted on kalahari...OMG...over R1000 per book. So after picking myself off the floor (after falling from my chair in shock), I looked on the Adams Bookstore website...and WOW! More than 50% cheaper. So I am breathing a little easier now.

Just put a whole bunch of books up for sale on the "books for sale" forum by the way. (All the way from 1st year to honours) if any of you are looking for some second hand stuff.
