I am so shocked to see how expensive the text books are for next year:

http://www.kalahari.net/books/Foundations-of-Computer-Science/632/31935942.aspx

COS113 Foundations of Computer Science

This year Feb 2008 R450
Now Dec R950

* Somebody has contacted me about buying mine and I just wanted to make a fare offer. But this is ridiculous !!! And Kalahari are cheapest (Van Schalkwyk) with this one ....

EDIT:
Here's another one:

Fundamentals of Business Information Systems
Feb I paid R400?
Its now R875

Have you checked the exchange rate lately? smile

Yes, I'm aware that has an effect, but it seems the distributors are taking advantage of this (and the fact that Amazon do not deliver to ZA).

The rand is only 50% weaker and not 150% since February.

I've just looked up my books for next year and have even changed my subject choice as I do not have R6K lying around for books. I'm doing my Certificate in Datametrics and I see I'm going to k@k off when I do my BSc...

Amazon.co.uk still delivers to SA. You can also get 2nd hand books that way at (sometimes) a good price.

You can always try the eBooks route?? (But you didn't get that recommendation from me!) eye rolling smiley

I've done the e-book route for 1 subject and it worked ok. I didn't print out everything - just important stuff. You can buy second-hand books from alibris.com - they deliver in SA and even with delivery costs it's still a lot cheaper.

You're right, I definitely think that distributors are taking advantage of an economic situation which benefits them in every way and has no positive effect on the consumers. I'm just thankful to be entering my last year, having only three subjects left and only needing to buy at most two books. I do have a whole pile of books at home that I'm planning on selling this year, I've posted a list here.

I'm just waiting for my registration to go through (after we receive our final marks) that I can get the books sorted ASAP. hmmmm I can see the $$'s flowing out of my pocket again...

If anyone needs software for cos261 (formal logic 2), I have for LINUX only (please don't bug me for the windows version - I DON'T have it). There was a bug in getting the updated software - you needed registered software to access the updates, but the legal software that you bought wasn't updated so it wasn't possible to register to get the updates. ugh.

So if you need the software (LINUX only), make a thread.

Re: Price of books 2009

What the sadest of all are if you've bought your books like a good student and it ends up they quote the whole book in the studyguide, or worse, there are minimal use in even having the book - like with ergonomics - bought a 700 p very good textbook, but the course only covered 5 of the 12 chapters. The I choose ebooks!

As an ebook hoarder, I have not found any of my prescribe books yet. I even thought of buying them legit from the publisher but they do not have them - I guess this is to stop distribution.

Whatever: Its KAK 'n BETAAL

Rule number 1, when buying textbooks from kalahari, always check the prices in the shops. Even though Kalahari gets their books from van scaiks (cannot remember how to spell it), the prices are hecticly different. I saved more than R1000 by getting in the car and driving to the shop. Some books were more than double the price!

This year I didn't even bother with Kalahari and I'll have all my books by the end of the week!

Agreed. I buy all my textbooks from Armstrongs in Linden - JHB.
I make a printout of the Kalahari prices and show the list to the
staff at Armstrong. They always offer me a far better price (often
at a fraction of Kalahari's prices).

I always get a quote from 4 shops.
I have found armstrongs to usually be the most expensive on all but a few textbooks without fail.
I always find the shop in hatfield to be the cheapest(can't remember its name it is near van schaiks) for most books without fail. By doing this I find I usually save a couple of thousand rands on what I would have paid if I just went straight to the first shop and bought, and it does not take me much extra time.

That would be Protea.

I actually found that 2 out of 5 books were cheaper at Protea vs Van Schaiks. I didn't bother with Juta or Kalahari.
