i'll start studying in october, 2 days before my first exam. hey, if it worked for my 3rd year subjects it should work for the 2nd year ones tongue sticking out smiley

and yes, i know my registration last year made no sense (i haven't reg'd for 2008). doesn't seem to bother unisa so it doesn't bother me! moreover,it was handy to get the difficult courses out of the way while i was living at my mom's, this year i'm doing 9-5 work. not that it matters until october, all the assignments last year (of which i did very few after i found out i only needed to do the first) got done in a few hours winking smiley

lol, dude, my hats off to you for starting to study in October thumbs up

i registered on the weekend. I asked if I could do MAT103 with MAT110 but the answer was no. You have to pass the latter before you can take the former. The "system" wont allow you to register both at the same time. And I was so looking forward to linear algebra sad smiley So I took PHY101 to make up for it.

Why PHY101 though? There's also APM modules - maybe you would of qualified for one of those.

why not? its interesting.

What's the syllabus about?

I did MAT103 without MAT110 but I did MAT111.
I did get an A for Matric Maths SG, does this make a difference?
avatar Re: When are you going to start studying?
January 07, 2008 09:19AM
unlikely, (A,sg) ~= (Q,hg) winking smiley

Q=very bad grade.
A in SG is actually a D I think in HG.
So why could I do MAT103 without doing MAT110?
avatar Re: When are you going to start studying?

I thought SG A was HG C?
Re: When are you going to start studying?
January 07, 2008 09:25AM
cause an A in SG (or D in HG) is a good enough pre-requisite
Re: When are you going to start studying?
January 07, 2008 09:26AM
so it did make a difference.

an A in sg is apparently equal to an E in hg, but i got an E for hg and had no funky course pre-requisites at unisa (i did however have to do maths1 at uct over two years, which is just as well cuz i'd have failed it otherwise!).

Hi. Back to work todaysad smiley

Registered for 6 modules this year so far today: APM113U, APM114V, MAT113Q, COS112V, COS113W (duh!) and CSS101H (another duh!). I did MAT103N, MAT112P, COS101S and COS111U last year and handled that OK whilst doing a full time job and doing some contract work.

Now, I also was thinking of adding STS1055 (Basic Statistics). Is that a wise move? How tough is it?

I suppose the only tough one so far this year will be MAT113Q compared to the others, although it should be just revision of stuff I did yonks ago. I am still hoping to get a credit for MAT111 if I pass MAT113Q also with a distinction and replace that with a second year Calculus module (Diff Equations) next year.

Any comments? Oh, and welcome back to all the usual suspects. Hope you all will have a fantastic new year.

Basic stats was basic smile Well its not difficult in my opinion. If you do your work it should be fine. If you have previous knowledge then it should be a breeze. It covers mostly concepts dealing with surveying and the methods used to collect the data and make "stats".

mat113 can be tricky, and it's about 10x more work to get a distinction for that (which i certainly didn't get) than for mat103 (95%). good thing you say it's your only heavyish course.

btw, does anyone know when the deadline for registration is? i have some rather big decisions to make and would prefer for my unisa courses to be shaped by those, rather than vice versa, so the later the better...

6 March 2008 looks like the latest you could register.
Check it out to make sure.

Lycium, 6 March.

Henry, I'm also back at work today. Stats is easy.

just bought 2 of my text books. c++ and precalculus. still need 4 more.

Lycium, was MAT113Q really that much more tougher than MAT112P? I got 80 for MAT112P but could have done better if I did not stuff up in the final like I did.

Basically, I skipped on doing revision on my implicit differentiation, and then completely forgot how to do it in the exam. I also ignored doing revision for first principles and got an easy question that I did not know how to do. How stupid of me. I will do better prep this year.

About the only difficult parts in MAT113Q I can see is partial fractions and maybe trig substitutions. The Taylor series...hmmm. I was asleep in class when my lecturer handled that 23 years ago.

the stats was incredibly easy .... unless you think you are super cow and can do al lthe stuff in your sleep - then you get a bit of a rude awakening.

i've not done mat112, in my first year (2006) i did 103 and 113. 113 kicked my ass (i was too lazy), whereas i could have gotten 100% for 103 (got 95%) if i bothered to do the last question in that blistering hot exam venue (i was sweating buckets and couldn't concentrate); i finished the whole exam in under 30 minutes, before we were allowed to leave. it really is such a piece of cake compared to 113.

partial fractions is easy, trig substitutions and identities kicked my ass because i didn't memorise the bajillion formulae and identities sad smiley taylor series is just one formula to remember, which i still know off-hand:

f(x) = f(a) + f'(a)(x-a)/1! + f''(a)(x-a)^2/2! + ...

i have a tut solution for 113 online btw (shows the simple partial fractions we got in tuts): http://www.fractographer.com/test3/mat113%20a3.pdf

I heard a very good saying on procrastination:

Procrastination is like masturbation.....it is very nice, until you realise you are only f*^#&*g yourself!
