silly question
January 02, 2008 04:57PM
on page 52 of the textbook there is a symbol that looks like the 'pi' symbol - what actually does it mean? I know the "sum" symbol, but for the ife of me I can't figure out what the other one is....

thanks!

Hi Celene

That is the product over symbol. Works the same as the sum over, just uses multiplication in place of addition. It is used to calculate the Cartesian product.

Hope that helps.
Personally; I'm really stressing about this exam sad smiley.

Knuth has a nice section on it in Volume 1.

But if you understand factorials then here is an example in this notation.

So if n = 4 then that that expands to
1*2*3*4

As apposed the sum notation which would be
1+2+3+4

See.. Im already reading the 405 forums and I only intend to take 405 in 2009.

Hmmm... I have now downloaded all the stuff all the COS honours courses that is available on Osprey. So as long as the assignments are similar enough I should be able to check that at least I am answering questions in the correct way.
