on page 52 of the textbook there is a symbol that looks like the 'pi' symbol - what actually does it mean? I know the "sum" symbol, but for the ife of me I can't figure out what the other one is....
That is the product over symbol. Works the same as the sum over, just uses multiplication in place of addition. It is used to calculate the Cartesian product.

thanks for the help the last time I did any kind of math subject was 1994 - so I am a big black hole of nothingness when it comes to the basics I am super stressing about this exam as well as cos460. weird how they are both offered by the same lecturer.... and still waiting for assignments for both of them

Hmmm... I have now downloaded all the stuff all the COS honours courses that is available on Osprey. So as long as the assignments are similar enough I should be able to check that at least I am answering questions in the correct way.
