Anyone have any idea how many students are
registered for this module? The reason I ask
is because there isn't too much activity on
this forum.

And, of course, no one seems to be having
any trouble with this module (I see no
questions being asked).

Makes one wonder, really!

YOu should be able to see how many on myUnisa...
It seems a trend...first year forums are very active and then it gt more and more quiet towards third year...maybe because people use email and msn?

I have been thinking exactly the same thing, appears as if only a handful of people are doing it this year.

According to my.unisa.ac.za, 122 students have
chosen to share their contact details with the class.

So, we have at least 122 students, 12 of which, I think,
have actually posted here ...

The options are:
1. This module is so easy the students aren't
seeking one another out.
2. This module is so difficult we have no time to
get any help.
3. This module is so *medium* that we just don't
care.

There. I think I've covered everything smile

haha, i agree with point (4) 340 and 311 takes up 80% of my time then squeeze everythign else in between.. i wonder how many people don't even know about the forum, or they study at unisa campusses where they don't need it. the harder subjects definitly gonna get more posts

has anyone looked at the cos 311 and 340 assignemnts for end of may? are the same or worse than the first ones?

I'm dreading the next cos340 assignment.sad smiley

This subject on the other hand seems to get easier every year, Strange.

The major difficulty (that I've observed from the phorum posts)
with those two subjects is all the mechanics surrounding
programming, not the actual programming itself. I completed
both the above subjects, and never had a problem with
the build environment (of course, when I did cos311, it was
CORBA, not QT).

Students know how to write C++ code (or rather, they know
how to write code that a C++ compiler will not reject), but
have no idea how a project is normally done. This includes not
knowing the difference between the compiler, the IDE, the editor,
the linker and the debugger. Not knowing those things means
that the student does not know how to compile a source file or
link the object against the libraries. This means that the student
cannot then write a Makefile, which in turn means that he cannot
troubleshoot when linkage/compilation fails with normal errors.

This is not wholly UNISA's fault; they do, after all, supply enough
documentation to teach someone all of those steps. However it
becomes more their fault when they never tell the student how to
go about reading the documentation they handed him.

I figure that there should be a "programmer literacy" type of
first-year module, where students are shown how to use a compiler,
a linker, one of the universally available traditional editors, and
how to write Makefiles. Until someone is comfortable with the
edit-build-test-debug cycle, they'll be too afraid to venture further
into programming; in addition, their "projects" are a mishmash
pile of steaming you-know-what because, although they wrote
standard C or C++ code, you cannot build it unless you use their
entire IDE because they don't know the difference between an IDE
and a compiler.
