Understanding f(x)
March 05, 2007 01:35PM
On page 35 of Gerald and Wheatley, the bisection method for the function f(x) = 3x + sin(x) - exp(x) = 0. I think i'm a little bit confused as to how f(x3) results into .0.033070 at the first iteration on Table 1-1. I thought f(x3) = 3x + sin(x) -exp(x) would be solved like this: 3 * 0.5 + sin(0.5) - exp(0.5)
= 1.5 + 0.0087265 - 1.64872
= - 0.139994. Instead what was written was 0.33070.
Is there something I'm doing wrong?
Pls assist.
