Assignment 1

I have started working on the first assignment, and I 've run into some problems. In question 1, it says to find the max and min of the functions. Are we supposed to read it from the graph, or work it out, because I end up with a messy equation that I now need to work out for 'x', something which is beyond me, i.e. tan(10/x) - 5/x = 0. And then further, when I try get points of intersection, the 3 equations for the x=g(x) I get are even worse, with them giving invalid results when I use x=0.5, 1.5 and 2.5 (actually doesn't matter what x I start with, at least one of the equations are invalid).
I have used Excel to graph. Is this allowed?

Any help appreciated.

Has no one started this assignment yet? I really cannot make headway, despite reading the prescribed material many times. Even the lecturer hasn't been much help, as she says that she only helps on material in the textbook, and as a rule doesn't assist in any way with the assignments!:
