Although the majority of vacancies are at the Muckleneuk Campus, certain subjects are still offered from the Florida campus. Finality as to the final Campus of tuition has not yet been determined.

 COLLEGE OF SCIENCE , ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY

SCHOOL OF COMPUTING(Ref COMP/Apr05)

The University of South Africa is a distance teaching university and the largest university in Southern Africa. The School of Computing is a dynamic comprehensive group established by the merger of the former Department of Computer Science and Information Systems (former Unisa) and the Information Technology Programme Group (former TSA). We offer qualifications ranging from national diploma, bachelors degrees through to doctorates in three Colleges: Science, Engineering and Technology; Economic and Management Sciences; and Human Sciences. The School of Computing actively promotes research in a variety of fields.

APPLICATIONS FOR POSITIONS OF PROFESSOR, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, SENIOR LECTURER AND LECTURER ARE INVITED FROM CANDIDATES WITH QUALIFICATIONS IN COMPUTING, COMPUTER SCIENCE, INFORMATION SYSTEMS, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, COMPUTER ENGINEERING, OR CLOSELY RELATED FIELDS.

Requirements :

Minimum Qualifications: As dictated by the operational needs of the School, other relevant qualifications and/or industry or research experience may be considered and selected criteria may be waived.

PROFESSORSHIP

  • a Doctorate.
  • A strong research record as reflected in publications in recognised subject‑related journals and peer-reviewed conference proceedings or computing artefacts.
  • Extensive teaching experience including supervision of Masters and Doctoral students or equivalent research and development experience.
  • General leadership and management experience at a senior level.
  • Specific research experience directly related to the research activities in the School as listed below.

Requirements:

ASSOCIATE PROFESSORSHIP

  • A Doctorate.
  • A good research record reflected in publications in recognised subject‑related journals and peer-reviewed conference proceedings or computing artefacts.
  • Suitable teaching experience and the ability to supervise post‑graduate research students, or substantial industry experience in a relevant application area.
  • Leadership experience at departmental and faculty levels; specific research experience directly related to the research activities in the School as listed below.

Requirements:

SENIOR LECTURESHIP

  • A Doctorate, or a Masters degree and publications in recognised subject‑related journals, peer‑reviewed

conference proceedings, or computing artefacts.

  • Significant teaching experience or experience in a relevant application area.
  • Leadership ability at course level.
  • Specific teaching and/or research experience in software engineering, object-oriented programming, object-oriented design and development, computer organisation, computer networks, computer security, hardware, or operating systems.

Requirements:

LECTURESHIP

  • A Masters degree and a good academic record; OR
  • an Honours degree with a good academic record and eligibility for acceptance into the masters programme, and extensive teaching experience or experience in a relevant application area.
  • Specific training background in software engineering, object-oriented programming, object-oriented design and development, computer organisation, computer networks, computer security, hardware, or operating systems is essential.

Other:

  • A commitment towards further research in one of the research areas listed below.
  • Teaching or industry experience in one or more of the teaching areas listed below.
  • Good communication skills.
  • The ability to work in a team environment as well as individually.
  • The ability to work to strict deadlines.
  • An excellent command of English.

ADDITIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS

  • Proficiency in any other official South African language.
  • A willingness to adapt to emerging information and communication technologies.

RESEARCH FOCUS AREAS OF DEPARTMENT

Human Computer Interaction; Information and Computer Security; Formal Aspects of Computing, including Artificial Intelligence and Knowledge Representation and Reasoning; Electronic Education Strategies and Development; and Systems Development, including Object‑Orientated Technology and Development, Distributed Databases, Software Specification and Project Management.

TEACHING AREAS

All areas of Computing (including both Computer Science and Information Systems) that fall within our curriculum with special emphasis on Software Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Networks, Computer Architectures and Hardware, Operating Systems, Computer Security, Human-Computer Interaction, and Object-Oriented Technologies and Programming, etc.

Duties:

Successful candidates will, in a team environment, participate in teaching which includes the compilation of study material and examination papers, communication with students, marking of assignments and examination scripts, conducting workshops for practical work, and actively engage in research. Other duties include contributing to the School = s management and administration, and community service. Candidates will be expected to provide study guidance to Honours, Masters and Doctoral students depending on their level of appointment.

GENERAL

The level of appointment will be commensurate with academic qualifications, depth of teaching or industry experience, and strength of research and publications. Qualifications must be in Computing, Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or equivalents. Teaching experience must be at the higher education level, and publications must be recent (last five years) and sustained.

SENIOR RESEARCHER

APPLICATIONS FOR THE POSITION OF SENIOR RESEARCHER ON A THREE YEAR FIXED-TERM CONTRACT BASIS ARE INVITED FROM CANDIDATES WITH THE NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS IN COMPUTING, COMPUTER SCIENCE, INFORMATION SYSTEMS, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, OR CLOSELY RELATED FIELDS.

Requirements :

  • A Doctorate (completed or submitted for examination) in one of the research focus areas above and
  • publications in recognised subject‑related journals or peer‑reviewed conference proceedings, or
  • computing artefacts.
  • Significant teaching or research experience, or experience in a relevant application area or the
  • management of collaborative projects.
  • Leadership ability at project level; specific research experience in people-issues related to computing and information systems, e-inclusion, and preferably also in quantitative management and the use of statistical techniques.

Duties:

  • Successful candidates will actively engage in the research projects of the School, especially the e-inclusion and disability projects with the aim of achieving the objectives of building a people‑centred, inclusive and development oriented Information Society, as set out during the 2003 World Summit on the Information Society.
  • The candidate will also be responsible for the general management of the School = s new Usability Laboratory.
  • Other duties include contributing to the School = s management and administration, postgraduate programme, and community service.

Assumption of duty: As soon as possible.

Current fringe benefits will apply. However, in view of the merger between the University of South Africa and TSA on 1 January 2004, certain changes to the conditions of service may be required. The right is reserved on behalf of the new institution to effect such changes. Any change in conditions will only become operative after one calendar month's written notice and will be made in full compliance with the relevant provisions of the Labour Relations Act.
