If we had a sit-down exam for this module I'm pretty sure nobody would even have thought of asking for the date of the exam to be moved, but would have ensured that they were ready on the specified exam date.
Considering this portfolio is our "exam", why is it then that people did not ensure that they were ready on the "exam" date of 01/11/2013, and are now asking for

Ok, portfolio uploaded and website tested, but I just remembered something that I read quite a while ago in the tut 101 letter Appendix:
QuoteWe expect all students to actively participate in the forum and help answering questions from
fellow students, where possible. As a PHP-developer you WILL spend hours on Internet forums
seeking solutions to problems. It is generally accepted that one

I should be OK then since I do have the connect.php file included as per the brief, and in all my pages I have the following comment related to the omission of connect.php from the normal pages:
Language: PHP// include functions.php, contains all function required to access DB and build customised html code for
// all webpages in this website
// connect.php is not included on individual pages

So, I've trimmed down and commented all my code and everything is uploaded to the host and working, but before I do my final submission upload I just have one quick question.
I know in the portfolio brief the one requirement is to have a connect.php file to handle the DB connections, and that this file should then be included on all the other pages.
The problem I have is that I do have

I asked the question because I'm a rebel without a cause
Honestly though, the marks doesn't really bother me since at the end

Hi Mac
Any idea on the ETA of the individual comments?
I'd really like to know where I lost marks since according to what I can see I met all the assignment criteria 100%, aside from having my pop-up window being a different size to t

Will we receive feedback on our assignments in some form to see where we lost marks?

This is the reason why I hosted my site at two different hosts, and I check both daily to confirm they remain available until I've received my marks.

The only reference to your student number in the tut101 or the submission procedure mentions that using only your student number in the url is not allowed, but I don't see anything that specifically states that your url must include the number.

Alternative would be to upload your files to your webhost and test the functionality there. This could be a solution until you manage to sort out your local WAMP/EasyPHP installation if you're concerned that you might not be able to do that before tomorrow, which is the due date for assignment 1 if I'm not mistaken.

I don't think you need to worry about your assignment page being indexed by the search engines since you already need to provide the page url as part of the assignment submission process. If the lecturing staff have the url they don't need anything else to access your page, other than a functioning webpage at the other end of the provided url of course.

I know we've been instructed to explicitly comment our code explaining exactly what each piece of code is for.
What I want to know is, is there a specific requirement on how we comment?
IE.
Language: PHP// function to do some stuff
function add_player(some stuff goes here) {
// do some stuff
$db_obj = some more code goes here;
// do some stuff using some stuff to acc

You should probably remove the url link to your assignment page from the code in your source.
That said, I had a look at the html page source and one thing that stands out is the following piece of code:
Language: PHP<style type="text/javascript">
textcode = window.open("code.txt","Code", "width=300, height=500");
</script>

You'll need to make use of the FIXTURE_ID field in both your tables (fixtures and team selection) to differentiate between the specific team selected for a specific fixture.

If you're not seeing your files it means they didn't upload to the host, or you uploaded them to the wrong location on the host. Also, I don't think it's a good idea to post the URL to your assignment page in the forums, even if it's not working.

The behaviour you're seeing using the code above is not really unexpected since it's doing exactly what you're telling it to do.
To get the code.txt to open in a new window you'll need to look at using something like javascript to create the pop-up window. Have a look at the Javascript open() function, that should help with this.

Ok, so I'm sticking to the prescribed files and filenames, but now I have a new question.
Will it be ok for me to add an additional file, ie. functions.php that contains some functions that I can use in all the pages to streamline the code, like one that handles generating the generic html code (headers, footers) etc? Obviously a link to the code txt file for this will be included in the

The first set of code is more along the lines of what's required for the assignment.
However, you can save yourself a bit of coding by storing the html code in php string variables. If I can make a suggestion, have a look at PHP strings, and specifically heredoc or nowdoc.

The file has to be .php - ie. index.php

From my understanding, and based on this post by mac, this semester will be the last semester where there will be no exam, only the portfolio.

@Nathaniel
Language: PHPdate(';H:i:s';);
The value returned by this isn't really directly connected to any one specific timezone at all, but to all of them in a sense. Time != Timezone if that helps at all.
Also, that command will return the requested information related to the server, not the client, since PHP is a server side code. While testing your code through your local

The timezone the server is located in refers to the actual server where your assignment website is being hosted, so it could potentially be anywhere in the world. This shouldn't be hard-coded but needs to be dynamically picked up from the server itself.
A hint would be to have a look at the PHP date() function and it's various options.

If it's a set requirement I'll stick to those files then. As for the DB fields mentioned, I just thought them redundant in the scope of the project, so they could've been left out completely, but as I said, it's nothing major, I'm just being a bit lazy.

Finally managed to get some time to work on the portfolio and during the initial design phase I've run into a couple of questions.
Do we have to stick to the number files and names specified in the portfolio brief in tut101? I'm asking because with some clever design/layout planning it's possible to combine the functionality of list_players.php, insert.php and possibly even edit

It also makes things a lot easier when it comes to string escape sequences, especially since we have to encapsulate the html code inside the php code.
