Hi all,
Got my final results - was wondering if there's anywhere we can see more feedback on this?
Prof - will we get more details on the project? Where we lost marks, where there could be improvements, etc?
Thanks!

Hi
Got a sms this morning saying my assignment has been marked. Searched all over the my.unisa website but can't find any results. Am I missing it somewhere? Or will it only be available later?
Thanks!

I think what Charles is saying is that there can be students in the database that aren't currently registered to any courses.
Ie - student John Doe exists in the student table, but since he's not currently registered for any courses, there won't be a entry with his student number in the course_student table.
I can't see how that messes up the referential integrity, it'

One of the most annoying things about programming isn't that your program acts on its own - it does *exactly* what you told it to do hehe
From what you wrote I assume that it works fine when you load the student_man.php page but not when you navigate there from list.php?
Are you sure you are passing all the vars that's being checked for on the student_man.php page, maybe check up o

Whatever coding needs to be executed when removing a student from a course will still come in play, I just meant that it would be nice if it were executed from the "delete a course" page instead of having to navigate away.

Thanks bigron11! I was using the "FILTER_VALIDATE_EMAIL" already to check the emails which I find very handy.
Is it possible to use the filter_var() to just check for specific characters inside a variable? I had a look at the php.net and w3schools but can't see an example of that.
How would you use it to check, for example, if a variable contains only letters a-z and ' (s

With regards to when deleting a course, to deny the admin to delete it until all students removed is one option, I do feel that there is another option too :
When trying to delete a course, the admin can be given a warning that there are students registered for the course (maybe even list all the students so the admin can see what is going on)
and then ask for confirmation that he wishes to

@Elizabeth
The tut letter actually does say that a student can "register online for one (or more) of many courses" (page 8)
With regards to how to delete students then when deleting a course I refer to what bigron11 also said - you don't delete the student from the student table, you'll delete the "connection" that linked that student to the specific course (ie -

What he's saying is that the way he has programmed it, if you want to delete a course, it first checks to see if there are students registered for that course, and if there is, it won't let you delete the course.
It is not a "built in function" that comes with php, it is the way he's structured his logic and coded the program

Found a nice little tutorial to help understand how exactly preg_match() works.
Very useful when doing your validation for the forms

Just wanted to check - seeing that mysql is going to be removed from php and replaced by mysqli, is it okay if we use mysqli in our project?
I know the tutorials used the mysql but seeing that it is going to be removed I'd prefer to learn the mysqli so long but not sure if it will run correctly on the server our projects will be tested on?
Anybody else using this?
Thanks

Okay, question :
You have a function that takes arguments, however these arguments you pass will only be there sometimes if certain conditions are met (like an if statement /switch).
In order for the function to run without errors, must you create empty variables beforehand if the conditions aren't met, or is there some way to check in the function if these variables / arguments really exi

Also remember to "clean up" your variables and not just to insert directly into the database what the user typed in the form fields - they may have typed some evil code!!
See "Chapter 9 - Security Issues" of the tutorial for more details!

Also remember it says on p11 that if you use functions they must be included in a file include/functions.php, so that's another page!

I've finished all the tutorials and walkthroughs and have read the project spec a good number of times and I'm eager to begin!
There are a few questions however :
• are we allowed to add other pages than those specified?
• there is a student registration form to add a new student, as well as an 'add student' under 'manage students' page... is there a differe

You are right, it is the character count. The reason for this is that readfile() actually prints out the content AND returns the length.
So as I understand this, in the following code :
Language: PHP$file_to_read = "dictionary.txt";
print readfile($file_to_read);
the "readfile()" is actually printing out the content of the document,
while "print&q

It's just as 72903694_Sipho said above - variables are case sensitive! So $full_name is not the same as $Full_name, if you change all the variable names to $full_name you'll see your code works!

The link at the bottom of page 3 (section 9) links to a website that says the website is offline due to maintenance (been like that for a few days)
These are the links at the end of section 10 if you can't find it :
For a more in-depth discussion on this, and other security issues, these links are quite useful:

It's a lot of fun to play with files and also very useful!!
Just a note of caution:
If you are using the "move on to next part" links at the bottom of the tutorial pages (on the CD), the link underneath page 2 and 3 takes you to section 13 (databases)!
Use the main contents page to go to the correct next section!

I've completed this section, no problems. So many things you can do with strings!
I see somebody else posted a thread for 'section 7 - GET & POST'... I'm working from the CD that I received from UNISA, and my section 7 is about string manipulation. Does this maybe differ from the tutorial downloaded from Home and Learn?
