Hi students!

Welcome to this short course! Why don't you start by telling us a little bit about yourself, and what you would like to take away from this course?

Just reply to this message!

I am a teacher by profession. I am currently completing the last course (ICT3714) in National Diploma in IT (NDINL) with UNISA. I am required to complete an Information System project which requires some skill and knowledge of PHP. I am self-taught in the very basic concepts of PHP, but I have realised that a thorough and proper knowledge of PHP is necessary and required if one has to manipulate online databases.

I expect to complete the portfolio successfully for this course as this course will run parallel with ICT3714. Both courses require a sound knowledge of PHP.

Hi, How do I change my user name? I understand I should have my student number there too. I am in the management of IT Businesses and now I need a re-immersion course (crash course) to understand web based database and programming. I started my career some time back as a software developer. I am looking forward for this course. I did not get the CD, from where can I download the contents?

You will need to create a new user name, using a different email address. No other way unfortunately sad smiley See the tut letter for contact details and request a new CD - it is fairly large to download.

I see we are using EasyPHP version 12.1. However the tutorial refers to EasyPHP version 1.8 and 2.0b1. The problem is running the initial test page is not working and the folder formats are slightly different. Is there an updated tutorial to use?

There is not much difference between version installations. There are many reasons for the test page not working depending on your PC's configuration. These problems cannot be covered in a single FAQ.... (just type "easyphp problem" in Google and see how many issues exist. For some issues see http://www.easyphp.org/faq.php)

Open a new topic (there is already a new topic on this) and post the steps you did.

Ahem. This question requires a new topic - it does not fit under Welcome! Read the tut letter smiling smiley

The whole idea of XAMPP and EasyPHP is that is it is a click-click install. See my earlier post in this thread.

Hello World!!, My name is Andrew, I recently graduated with a Bachelors In Business Admistration (BBA) in Computer and Management of Information Systems(CMIS).
I took this course for 2 reasons. Firstly beacause the world is following and heading into "Cloud Computing", and because of that most apps are web based. So
i hope this course will increase my knowledge in that area. I also am a huge fan of software development, and i hope the quality of applications i develop after this course will be of
a much powerful nature!!

Hi Everybody

I'm Linda, business analyst.

I need to know more about the web environment since it seems to be the direction the majority of information systems are taking.
I've started out as a programmer and that experience has always been very beneficial when I later moved into the field of business analysis.

Technology and methodology continuously change - I'm convinced that understanding the web environment will enhance my contribution to the information systems development process.

Hi all

I go by the name Shado (not my real name) but more people know me by my handle than my real name. smile

I'm a self taught web developer that specialises in HTML/CSS and Wordpress. In the passed 2 years I have build over 50 database driven websites but I lack the ability to script my own php scripts. I'm hoping this course will give me a better understanding so that I can stop manipulating other peoples scripts and start focusing on scripting my own.

Hi there,

my name is Zan, and I am 23 year old part-time student, I have done the first year of my national diploma in IT last year, but thought id rather get into what i specifically see myself doing in the future ~ development !

I have another module registered this semester so I am rather stressed out concerning doing both at the same time as it seems that doing anything else with this short course is folly. But I am hoping and willing to work to a great outcome.

Good luck and logic to everyone doing this course!

I made the mistake to use my full time student number and not my short course student number. Can I use it like this (signature) or do I need to register again ?

Also I would like to use mylife email address, but I are unable to login as it does not want to accept the password that is also valid for my.unisa.
If I can log in then I can re-register with that email address on this forum with the correct student number.

Fair... but ultimately they will ask so what apps have you developed. That is why we have a portfolio, so you can show them smiling smiley

This is true and yes a portfolios are vital but unfortunately most recruitment agencies still ask for paper work and refuse to even look at your CV unless you provide copies. This does not mean that the employer is necessarily looking for someone with qualifications vs practical skill but one still needs to get passed the *"unqualified" recruits.

* a recruiter that has no real understanding of how the industry works.

In my opinion, someone with practical skills is far more employable than someone with a decree (if I was employing I would hire the one that can do the work vs the one that talks about it) but if you are going to spend the time and money in a course then it may as well be in a course that is a) recognised and b) contributes to further study. As far as my research goes UNISA's course is the only one that offered both so you can't really go wrong.

With this course you might not necessarily get a senior coding position but it will help to get your foot in the door.
