Probably quicker to uninstall then re-install. There are solutions available on the web (pick one here http://www.apachefriends.org/f/search.php?st=0&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&sid=09224b6de70a232d1cafcbefd70061cf&keywords=%231045+-+denied+user+'root'%40'localhost'+(using+password%3A+NO ), but it is much quicker to uninstall re-install

Well, there is not just one reason for such errors, and there are different approaches to fixing it - depending on what really went wrong (same error for different reasons). If this on a real server, one would not want to leave it empty, but that would not be your problem because you will not be responsible for the sever. So all that matters now is to make it work.

I had that problem also, I had to uninstall XAMPP,not just uninstall it but delete the whole folder aswell because some files were still left
