!! That's quite a big one. Sorry, but the chances of my having even an idea of the solution before 8.30 am tomorrow are zero.

You see eddy, that particular question was asked before, so it would actually be nice to have some idea of what might be happening there hey.

Well, I'm sure that the questions of tomorrow will be quite do-able.

OK let me have a closer, less phobic look at it.

OK, first iteration has "Products" as a kind of central entity with relations with "Blueprint", "Parts", "Software".

"Parts" has a relation with "Supplier"

Relations would be by exported foreign keys.

Now as for the price Changes that they want to track, in spite of the fact that those would be redundancies, maybe one needs a PriceDate table to track that history. Combined price-date would make a unique key?

Is that the major problem? How to deal with the calculated fields/ historical data?

What do you regard as the most problematic part of the design? Maybe after you've torn apart my suggested tables you could give your opinion, and I'll give mine?

»/edit« OK I must admit that's a pretty lousy first iteration/ hardly a contribution.

For one thing it's clear that they want a hierarchy of entities, where at the top is a "Hardware" entity with common properties of the subtypes "5A" and "5B".

I think one could find a few more such hierarchies in the wording, too.

Hey eddy, thanks for the help. I don't think I will be figuring it out, so I'm going to go to bed now. I need some sleep.

Thanks for all the help.

And the likewise..

It's pretty much "make a special History table". Then just relate it to the tables whose history it keeps.

I still think I'll need the smelling salts if something like that appears in the exam.

What about it? I was just about to skip pages 221 to 229. Think we will really need this one ?
