I had to do it iteratively (well "had to" is getting ahead of myself, because there's still a ways to go). May help if you do the same.

Right, so what about all those models and things? To begin with I jumped over them, and went to Q9. Some of the proofs have given me brain damage, but at least you get to leverage all that excessive extra work you put into COS261, eh?

The best tip I can give for 9.4 (which took me literally 2 weeks to figure out) is that when you're making your substitution for z, "Any t will do". Because I can't abide the idea of anyone suffering too much less than me on this one, that's probably about as helpful as I'm likely to be. Cryptic it may be, but it's a good tip. (Or I imagine it to be so: Could be my "solution" is purely an illusion of my own deranged mind).

Ja, well there you go. You'd have to be a bit more explicit if you wanted more help. Most of the people who've been here and done this don't have the assignment questions in front of them.

The questions on the models were ok, it was just Q7 tht stumped me.
Also Q1.2 : I couldn't find how to translate the word "but".
I have played around with 9.2 but everytime I assume P(x) I don't seem to end up with Q(x) because the premise has NOT P(x) .

My brains started to hurt by the time I got to 9.4 so I'll get back to that one just now.

How many courses you doing btw?

If you still have your LPL from last year, that'll take care of 'but' quite well for you (in fact for the translation questions I reckon LPL does a much better job of explaining things than the new text book).

If I think up a "fair" tip for Q9.2 (to start you off on the path that leads to the same wrong answer as I have) I'll let you know.

I'm doing 5, effectively. 4 + 4 = 8 does me Y3 of the degree(or maybe I'm rash to assume the old rules still apply to anyone who started under the old scheme?), and I have a supp extra this semester.

I'm doing 4 courses this sem and 4 next , I applied for exemption of credits for maths modules fr 1st year, if that comes through then I'm done with the degree at the end of this year.

If they won't give maths credits at least the courses won't be too difficult for you? You've been there, done that.

Hey thanks, good luck to you too, really can't wait to finish with studies and actually start working. Thus far I don't have any practical experience of what I have been studying, so it gets a bit hectic. I plan to do postgrad studies as well, so obtaining a good symbol is really important to me.

Hey slow eddy. I have started in 2007 (thus old 2089 curriculum) and have done 28 out of 30 modules. I have done COS301, 311, 351 and INF303, 307 and doing COS361 now. I am now being told that I also need COS321, because the new rules says you need 5!! I said I don't agree - that's not the arrangement when I started in 2007. Still waiting for their answer. What do you think - is it fair?

I definately don't think that's fair, but most of the time the decisions that are made here are not always in our best interests.
I was studying at ukzn, and when I decided to come over to unisa, they told me I'll get credited for most of the first year subjects. But I had to do so many again.

When it comes to credit transfers I think universities just tend to be difficult in general. Some of it's probably something like mutual jealousy, but most of it seems to be from an unwritten rule that once you've started at Uni-X, you are doomed to stay there throughout your undergrad years. You're welcome to jump ship for postgrad (almost are encouraged to do so), but for undergrads, because they can't apply the death penalty for desertion, they do the next best thing they can.

@ vanzyl. That's bad news. I'd better check to see whether I'm in for another 6 months of this.

Do I think that's fair? Is the Ayatollah a Catholic? ... Hang on ... you mean they say you need 5 for a major? I think they may have always required 5 for a major, unless I'm getting mixed up here, and 2089 was one of the streams, and is not the general BSc. However, I'm not sure. Certainly if they've gone and shifted your goalposts, that's not fair. Maybe find one of the general calendars, or post on social forum, where there are more eyes to see your complaint? If it turns out you just misread the small print, at least that saves you from feeling bitter. Give yourself a gentle little slap on the forehead, say "Silly me", and then just keep doing what you've been doing all these long years, and carry on getting on with it.

2089 rules in 2007:

The curriculum for the BSc degree comprises THIRTY MODULES (except where indicated otherwise under the specialisation streams), must
be composed as follows:
(a) At least TWENTY-FOUR of the thirty modules must be in subjects from the list under Sc4. Note that:
?? not more than FOURTEEN of the thirty modules may be on fi rst level. This includes any courses that are selected under Sc5(1)
(c). Additional modules on fi rst level may be taken for non-degree purposes (NDP), subject to Sc5(1)(e);
?? at least SIXTEEN of these twenty-four modules must be on second and third level and of these at least EIGHT must be on third level.
If Physics III, Psychology III or Chemistry III were included in the curriculum, at least four further modules on third level must be
selected. If any two of Physics III, Psychology III and Chemistry III were included, the two courses are regarded as the equivalent of
ten modules on third level. See Sc5(1)(b);

2007 rules for COS Major:

COMPUTER SCIENCE
First level: CEM101, COS101, 111, 112, 113
Second level: COS201, 211, (212 or 214), 221
Third level: a minimum of THREE third level COS modules chosen
from the following list: COS301, COS311, COS321, COS340,
COS351. The fourth module must be chosen either from this
list or from the following list: APM311, COS361, INF303,
INF305, (INF306 until 2002), INF307 (and INF303), INF308
(and INF305), INF320.

2010 rules:

COMPUTER SCIENCE
NQF Level 5: COS1501, 1511, 1512, 1521
NQF Level 6: COS2601, 2611, 2614, 2621 and at least ONE of COS2626,
2633, 2661
NQF Level 7: COS3701, 3711, 3721 and at least TWO of APM3711,
COS3751, COS3761.

Does tht then mean that COS3711, become compulsory if you want to major in comp sci. I am going to do 5 cos modules just in case this year. Bt I was going to make the 4th one a choice bet COS3711 and 3712(comp graphics).
The thing is I didn't quite grasp Qt very well last year. There were gaps in my understanding

That looks to me like you only need four. Any change would be unfair to you.

Hope they agree with you. I have a personal interest in this, too. Looks like my third year choices would no longer even make up a COS major if we fall under the new rules now.

Between advanded prog. And comp graphics which would you think is a better choice, I would really like graphics, but I am not sure. Is there a way to get more insight on a course b4 actually choosing?

Well for Advanced Programming you just see if reading the rest of Ezust makes sense, in your case. (Also look at the discussion; it's quite busy).

As for Graphics, I would think that this is something that only really makes sense to know in the context of some more advanced programming knowledge than one has by the end of second year. I can't imagine it being a decent "OR" to the Advanced Programming course. The only really "alternative alternatives" are AI and Numeric 2.

Just from a practical point of view of learning something you can use to begin to learn to do something useful with, I would guess that a dose of Advanced Programming is going to be of more general usefulness than Graphics.

They both have the reputation of being tough courses, so I don't think there's much to choose in that respect.

Really, the best place to ask about something like this is Social forum. Most of the participants there are Hons students or beyond. They've done all these, they've applied what can be applied, they have opinions that are more worth listening to than those of any of us who are still on the way there.
