The National Research Foundation(NRF) invites students to apply for funding. Please bring this to the attention of the Honours and/or BTech students at your colleges.
Who may apply?
Registered UNISA Honours or BTech students who meets the following criteria:
• Selection of students will be based on academic merit.
• All the block grants shall be exclusively for South African citizens except for Innovation block grants, only 87% of the block grant will be awarded to South African citizens and South African permanent residents; whereas 13% should be awarded to foreign nationals and allocated as follows:- 5% SADC, 4% to the rest of Africa and 4% to students outside Africa.
• Students should have obtained at least 60% in his/her major subject(s) in the preceding academic year to qualify for this bursary.
• Student must not have failed any major subjects/courses taken during the final year of undergraduate study or third year of study in the case of a four year first degree.
• These scholarships may not be held concurrently with bursaries, grants or emoluments which bind the recipient to enter into service of the contract holder on completion of his/her studies.
• These scholarships may not be held concurrently with any other NRF, government-funded scholarships, Science Council or Research Institute bursaries.
• Bursars are not allowed to be employed on a full time basis, may only undertake a maximum of 12 hours per week of teaching, tutorials, assistance or demonstrating duties.
• In line with the South African equity targets, 60% of the block grant should be awarded to female students.
• In awarding these scholarships, preference will be given to students who have a keen interest in registering for a Master’s degree in 2017.

The bursary amounts allocated are:
• NRF Freestanding Honours Block Grant Scholarships – R 30 000
• DST Innovation Fund Honours Scholarships – R 50 000
• NRF Scarce Skills Honours Scholarship – R 50 000
