SQL plus login error

I enter the user : system and password: PASSWORD. I leave the host string empty and press enter. I then get an error : ORA12560: TNS:protocal adapter error. Please help.

Please call Oracle support: 011-319-4010 and state the Customer support number of: 15915156

I see its a national number but when I get through, the call centre is actually in Europe. Do I still pay national call rates?

I checked sql plus again now. It seems it cant resolve the host string. Because even if I enter an invalid user or password, there is a moment of waiting then it returns the error ORA-12154 TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified. So now my question is what do I use for the host string? And must anything be configured after I install Oracle?

Please run, on the command line
lsnrctl status
If it shows the same error. Then you probably need to start your services.
