Can anybody please explain the logic behind the fact that a discontinued book is being prescribed?

There are plenty excellent (cheap and AVAILABLE) Java books out there. Why not prescribe one of them?

To quote Tutorial Letter 101 (COS2144/101/0/2009):
Quote

This is the last year that this course will be presented as a full year course using the prescribed textbook by Jia. For 2010 this course will be restructured as a semester course using a new prescribed textbook.

I suppose they needed the time to create a new syllabus based on a newer book.

Also consider that UNISA tries to keep courses the same for as many years as possible to allow for student to complete there degrees in 8 years.

According to the website wil this be the last year this book will be used. I think the reason dor this is the fact that last edition of the textbook was in 2003 and I'm sure that Java developed alot over the years
I'm sure that the lecture will agree on this.

There have been changes in Java but the fundamental concepts they teach in this course have not changed
