I had a bit of a debate with someone on this again. Should prostitution be legalised? I say yes....those woman have absolutely no protection or support. No one is there to educate them on safety, or to provide a safe environment. And face it, its the oldest profession in the world, and its not going anywhere. Don't the police have real criminals to catch?

Any views?

I posted a while ago that Amsterdam were planning to crack down on drugs and prostitution (they go together). They implementing that now. This is from one of the most liberal cities on earth in that respect.
Has anyone seen the local movie "discreet"?

about 2 people who can't fall in love. One is a pastor's son and the other is a high class hooker. The two meet and talk the whole movie (no action). It was a cool movie

hmmm...

I feel sorry for the females who genuinely find that prostitution is the only way they can make a living. but then so many of them go into prostitution for drug money.

making it legal just encourages it.

are escort agencies legal?
avatar Re: prostitution

Make it legal and there will be less angry virgins who want to become soldiers and f up the world!
avatar Re: prostitution
December 18, 2008 01:19PM
drugs is on of the reasons it should be leagalised. The pimps get the sex workers addicted, and then they have cheap labor...they work to support their habbits. If it was legal, there could be decent institutions providing a safe environment, and even have things like UIF and healt care.

**making it legal just encourages it.**
No encouragement is needed, human nature would make sure their is always work for them.

I really feel sorry for these woman. I spoke to people who has done social work with them. These people have circumstances we cant imagine. And then they also have to do that work, where they are raped with no protection, and used as "slaves". Men will always make sure there is a demand for sexworkers, all I am saying is make it safe for them?
avatar Re: prostitution

Excort agencies is not legal no..... I am not sure about the legalities, but I remember at some stage it seemed as if they were going to legalise prostitution, but not the institution of it. I.e., you can stand on the street corner, but you cant employ woman to do it as a business. Not sure if thats true? All I know is that escort agencies are not legal. They exist because they have to bribe the police, with money and other services.

the thing is, no matter how "safe" you make it for them, there is always going to be some f-ing asswipe who comes along and rapes them.

Do you really think that Mr fck-up is going to 'wait' while she puts a condom on before he rapes her?
avatar Re: prostitution
December 18, 2008 01:25PM
Nope...but in a safe environment, where it is regulated with a huge bouncer at the door, that guy wont try it...like at the strip clubs. If those guys get out of hand, they get thrown out..

I have the same views on this that I have on drugs, fireworks(In earlier thread) and everything else.

Attempting to force the opinion of one group of people onto another group of people using the law is wrong and will never work.
It simply makes the problem worse and breeds underground markets where far worse things happen then would happen in the legal ones.
The correct thing for group A to do if they want to try and reduce group B from doing something is to make it unfashionable via some form of propaganda.
By abusing the law in this fashion we make the law as a whole more ineffectual in places where it actually should be applied. We should be trying to make government and the law smaller not bigger and more bloated.

In short no it should not be illegal.

how are they going to control it?

sure, Mr Rapist goes into the club, acts all nice, then takes lady into a room. Then he can do as he pleases. there is no stopping him doing whatever he wants.... only afterwards when everything is done and he lets the woman go, will he be thrown out, but then its too late

The same way they control any other crime. Arrest the person doing it.

Thats the point, if brothels were legal, they could be regulated, and then the girl; on the street would be better off working for a brothel. At the moment, the brothel is not protecting them at all, they are extorting them!

I think your views are shaped by your experiences: a nice job, house, etc. Those girls "chose something else" (apologies to trainspotting)

Re: prostitution

the better solution is to take those ladies, train them to do some other things, given them an avenue away from prostitution.

but, we as a human race are screwed up so that will never work, we will keep taking the 'easy' way out. Legalise the whole thing so you can perhaps get rid of the pimps and possibly drug side of things.

On that note, drugs should also be legalised. If people want to be goofed out all their lives, then so be it. Maybe make drugs really cheap/for free as well. Let people kill themselves really young with the really bad drugs - clean out the gene pool a bit

yeah, the amsterdam municipality has programs like food coupons for hookers that followed a state sponsored program to skill them up in other things.

Something that can be done at the same time as it being legal, and with a lot more effect then when it is illegal.

Drugs should be legal, the money that was spent enforcing laws regarding it should be spent on therapy and counseling for those who don't handle it responsibly. Much like alcohol is now(Although more money should be spent on counseling etc..)
It would be far easier to fix someone legally doing something through therapy then to fix someone who is involved in other dodgy legal activities as well(And is in debt to a drug lord etc.).

Legal drugs are less likely to be mixed with rat poison and other arb. chemicals so they are also less likely to do as much permanent damage and cause less deaths.

and if I recall correctly, there are drugs that affect ones fertility. the more drugs you take, the more sterile you become, the less babies you make.
avatar Re: prostitution

It has always been my observation that women are the most against prostitution - no
amount of reasoning ever gets through to them. No woman would like to see it legalised.
Period.

Since it is not possible for women to debate the pros and cons of whether prostitution
should be legal or not, they should rather stay out of the discussion - the only thing
they can add is "It should not be legal because I do not like it", which we've all already
heard before.

BTW: Prostitution is the worlds 2nd-oldest religion; reasoning would indicate that
advertising preceded it.

That's a bit extreme, eh?

Anyways, everyone knows that there aren't any women on the internet

wow goose, you're telling a woman to stay out of a discussion because "it is not possible for women to debate the pros and cons of whether prostitution
should be legal or not".

no wonder the human race is so twisted, when so many of the population think women are just dumb holes for sticking penises into.
