2C-4 Question 2

http://www.ehost.co.za/

The cost of domain registrations vary by domain type. For instance .com domains will usually be more expensive than .co.za domains.

A typical .com domain costs in the region of R150 per year while a .co.za domain is normally about R100 per year.

The money paid for domain registration is distributed amonst the sellers, resellers and ICANN. Normally a small portion is paid to ICANN. The rest are the profit percentages of the various sellers in the supply chain.

Although some ISP's will normally advertise a domain name as free, the price is normally made up somewhere else like paying for a hosting package or offering advertising for them on your site. So in reality you don't really get free domain names.

co.za
cost: R50 pa.
this applies to dot coza domains only.
With them, the fee goes towards UniForum SA who (as they state on the site) charge the yearly fee because:
"* There is an ongoing cost associated with running the needed infrastructure around CO.ZA .
* There is a cost involved with unused domains.
* It lessens the cybersquatter problem."

domain name registration costs from US$10 (for unusual or obscure names or phrases) to US$2 000 (for a premium domain like lovezone.net)
20 US cents go to ICANN per domain name registration year.

http://www.za.net/ offer free domain registration but this only applies to NGO's, companies, people who can't afford to pay the registration fees or just people who don't believe domain names should be paid for. Only for domains with the suffix za.net or za.org

The costs associated with domain registration really depend on what you're looking for. Top-level domains are generally pricier, but their influence on brand perception is more positive.
