golden compass only starts on thursday/friday

I just got a ridiculous email telling people to boycott sterkinekors showing the movie because in the movie 2 children kill god. wtf.... I read the book 2 weeks ago - unless I lost some pages I don't even recall anymention of GOD, God or god or gOD or goD or wait.. there was a dog... maybe the person who wrote the email was dyslexic...

golden compass is a movie based on a book called northern lights in which (apparently) 2 kids kill god.

or, if you read the book that the movie is based on, its a fantasy book about a child who has a destiny. It has witches and talking animals and polar bears who wear armour in it.

Re: damn these pirates!!

Northern Lights is the first book in a trilogy by Philip Pullman called His Dark Materials. The events and viewpoints that spawn the controversy only occur in the later books.

@ Velvet: ahh, I am only on page 80 of the second book.

I just find it silly that people want to boycott a movie they know nothign about. Needless to say I no longer expect reply emails fro mthe original person who sent me the email - I sent them a rather interesting email back.

@Randal : by now you should know that people will keep hijacking threads smiling smiley Maybe you should hijack one of the religious ones to say what you found on other peoples pcs smiling smiley you're probably seeign half my stuff on the network - well, except for the porn

Well.. I have read all three. Very enjoyable trilogy. (Oh and I just read a recent book set in this world a whilst afterwards called "Lyra's Oxford".)

Its set in an alternative universe in which the first Angel makes himself god and is known as the Authority. In the end of the final book the Authority gets killed accidently. The Authority has a "head" totalitarian angel that has taken control, who of course is Metatron, and the parents of the heroine redeem themselves (they do some terrible things) by sacrificing themselves to destroy Metatron. But this all happens in book three ("The Amber Spyglass"winking smiley.

In general Philip Pullman is very critical of organised religion because of the abuse that gets carried out in order to enforce its control (eg Inqusition, crusades, witch burning) and the book carries a strong warning against it.

But it is quite spiritual as well - as love and self-sacrifice are in the end of the final book what the hero and heroine learn in order to become adults.

The Golden Compass is the first book in the trilogy but its original title was "Northern Lights"; but the American publishers changed the name. The name is inappropriate because the golden compass is in actuality a reference to the aletheiometer which is not a compass at all.

possibly also because it could be mistaken for a cannabis cultivation guide.

'harsh? sorry, i don't have the basic understanding of such a word.'
'I though zombies were living dead corpses walking around trying to eat young virgin girls'
