On page 680 in the text book the process of creating a full outer join is explained. The line "Where a.dept_code = b_dept_code (+)" returns an error

" Extra) in query expression 'a.dept_code = b.dept_code (+)' " is returned when the query is run.

I have not come accross the (+) in the chapters that we had to study. So what is the right syntax? I use Access 2003.
