According the tutorial letter 101, the sixth edition of Whitten's "Systems Analysis & Design Methods" will not be suitable. Does anybody have any ideas as to why this is so.

Because we update the material and work according to the new prescribe book. I am sure you would appreciate a course that is up to date and one that could help you to be a better prepared person.
