Howzit gvs !!

okay for question 9 I got 11010001 which is answer 3 and for question 10 I got (10011000)2 answer 1.

Try doing then again and see if you get the correct answers. Im pretty sure im correct.

What answers do you get for Questions 7 and 8 ?

Question 11 they talk about a packed decimal representation. What does that mean ?

Question 8 - Answer 1.
A7,9 + 58,3 = FF,C. But you have to round up
witch is 100.

Packed decimal representation is on page 38 in the study guide(tutorial letter 501).

Howzit Mr. Menth -- yeah welcome. I'm laughing noticing the time of morning that you posted that comment 3:13 am!!

GVS - I now follow Question 8 easily enough. One needs to be careful when converting from Hexidecimal to binary notation. One needs not to forget to add the extra 0 to the left. For example Hexadecimal 4 = 100 , therefore the true conversion is actually 0100

Question 7 have worked out as well although Im not 100% clear on it. You do use Two's complement representation right ? So when changing 89,A to binary I see you change all 0's to 1's and all 1's to 0's untill the last 1 which you dont convert. The tricky part though is I wasnt sure if you convert digits right through past the decimal as though you basically ignore the decimal until the last 1 digit which you then dont convert whether it is before or after the decimal comma.

I didn't use two's complement in question 7. Used binary arithmetics as on page 19 and 20 in the study guide.
The actual answer I got was ED8,D and option 2 was the closest to it. Strugling with the borrowing and carrying part of the arithmetics.

I couldnt find anything were two's complement was used on digits.

Question 7 - I converted to Binary digits first and then converted the negative value to two's complement so that I could add the binary numbers together.

when adding in two's complement you dont carry the last digit over. With this I found I got answer 2.

wasup guys um from zimbabwe i have finished the first assignment.
unfortunately um in an internet cafe right now and i dont have my books with me.
um not sure what some of u guys are saying about Q7 but i can only say that there is no shortcut to two's complement. u have to stick to the rules to come up with the right answer. gvs read the prescribed book it expalains it easier (arithmetics in binary). remember when u are converting in a negative number in twoz complement.u first change te number to its binary form then change all 0s to 1s and all 1s to 0s(thats complementing) e.g the value of 7 in binary is 111(mostly u are required to represent a number in 8 bits) so it wil be 0000 0111. if u are to represent -7 in 2z complement using 8bits. first change the 0s and 1s from the value of 7. so we will have 1111 1000 then we have to add 1bit to that value so we wil have 1111 1001 this is the value u -7 in two,s complement.

Why are you guys talking about using two's complement in question 7? Nothing is said about using two's complement. My answer was option 2. What answer did you get?

Question 7 says nothing about using two's compliments. When they don't specify a specific type of arithmetic (one's, two's, signed or unsigned) then you assume that it's unsigned without any compliments. The easiest thing to then do is convert each number to decimal, do the decimal calculation, and convert the answer back to the required notation (in this case hex - divide by 16 and keep the remainder). Should get 3766.8125 which is EB6.D option 2.

Re the original poster Question 9 and 10:
for -47 you find the binary equivalent of +47 which is 00101111 in 8bits. using one's compliment you get 11010000. add 1 to get two's compliment to get 11010001 which is option 3. Question 10 same procedure

Please help with question 11. What is a packed decimal?

My answers for Question 7 are 2.
Question 8 are 1 and question 9 are 3.

What about question 19. All answers are true!

Question 11: Answer 3
Pages 77 and 78 in Textbook.
Transfer time is the time to move data from the disk to the CPU/memory.
The definition they give is for seek time.
