Is it compulsory to know the operating system that came with the study material. Any guidance on this software?

I do not think so, but you do require it for assignment 3. Page 18 of tut101.

If you are using windows @ home , you can use microsoft virtual pc to install and run it.

What OS are they using? Are they not using Knoppix? The reason I ask is because Knoppix is ready to run from the CD - no installation of anything required whatsoever!

Any guidance on the cd. After I boot my computer with the cd in the cd-rom it starts to load the operating system. Then after configuring the pc shut down automatically and starts to make a sound. Can anyone help me? what should be done.

That is more than likely some hardware issue, I would recommend downloading the newest version of Knoppix or getting one of the other "Live-CD" Linux distros. Just Google for it, there are loads. I myself run FreeBSD and Ubuntu Linux. Very fun to play with, very cool to use day to day!
