So why hasn't risc booted cisc out of the market place?

Is it true that cisc is preferred for mainframes? Thus IBM maintains a hold on the industry? Just guessing. Any input will be appreciated.

Because RISC and CISC can't be directly compared (i.e. sometimes subjective), RISC is not the outright winner. If anything, CISC continues to forge ahead with its instruction sets, and RISC itself is becoming a hybrid of the 2 technologies. See towards end of Ch13.
