Module Query
October 30, 2006 02:01PM
I am thinking about taking this module next year. What is it like? Difficult/Easy, Interesting/Boring...

Any advice appreciated.

Well, now that I am trying to study, it is seeming quite difficult. The work throughout the year was not too bad. The assignments were OK. I am just hoping that the assignments were a fair indication of what we can expect in the exam, unlike another subject I wrote... Gotta go. Function Points Mark II is calling

A pass is guaranteed if you do the work
(unlike some other modules where all the
work in the world will not save you), simple
calculations, nothing that will make you pull
your hair out, the textbook is not that good
but certainly not at all bad (only found three
errors so far ... all typographical, not logic

Chapters 1 - 4 are almost all theory, so be
prepared to memorise some stuff (few tables
to calculate, but something that could be done
by a std 6 or 7 highschool student).

Chapters 5 - 9 are mixed theory (very little)
with the majority of the work being
calculations and/or diagram drawing - CPM/Pert
diagrams, Gantt charts, etc ... means you have
to memorise very little, you just need to understand
where all the numbers in the tables and charts
are coming from (once again, calculations are not
much more than addition, subtraction and the very
rare multiplication).

Do a google search on precedence networks,
pert diagrams, gantt charts, CPM diagrams.

Easily 20% (or perhaps closer to 40%) of the work
is of those things - the rest are of a similar
difficulty so there is nothing to be 'ascaird

I agree that a pass is guaranteed if you do the work. One thing I liked is that there was little rote memorising required - if you just understand how to apply a formula or understand the content in general you'll be ok. Which is more than I can say for INF305 but enough has been said on that one already!
On the whole I found the course interesting and useful in my work as well.
Good luck!
