PRE-A. Task 2C-4, Q2
February 16, 2010 05:27PM
The two Domain Registration Services:

1.In SA: www.imaginet.co.za
The cost to register a .biz, .com, .org, .co.za, .info and .net domain is R171.00
The cost to register a . tv domain is R456
The cost to register a .mobi domain is R249

2.Globally: www.godaddy.com
The cost to register a .com $10.69, .info $0.89, .net $9.99, . org $14.99 and .mobi $6.99

Part of the registration fee goes to a Domain Name Register like the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Some ISPs will register and pay for the name for free, e.g. glowhost.com, but only if you use them as your web hosting provider.

TWO DOMAIN NAME REGISTRATION SERVICES:
A.)Synergy Hosting FROM @ R39.00 p/m TO R179.00 p/m
B.)AFRIHOST.COM FROM R65.00p/m TO R399.00p/m

WHAT IS THE COST TO REGISTER A DOMAIN NAME?
Domain name registration costs depend on the costs levied by the central domain authority PLUS the costs of an ISP to support and provide infrastructure for the domain name.Domain names are registered with central domain name authorities. For instance, a .co.za domain name is registered with Uniforum, The central domain name authorities charge a fixed and constant price for domain name registration. This means that there is a flat fee payable for .co.za domain registrations. domain registration prices can vary greatly.Depending on the costs levied by the central domain authority, and the costs incurred by the ISP to make the domain "alive", your ISP will charge you a fee for initial registration and for annual renewal.

REGISTRATION FEE GO TO?
Part of the cost goes to the domain name service provider and ISPs provide additional services for your domain name and will add an additional charge on top of the basic domain registration cost.

DO ANY ISPs PROVIDE A FREE DOMAIN REGISTRATION SERVICE?
I could not find any reputable service provider that provide a totally free service, reading the fine print there is always some sort of cost involved.

Two domain registration services:

1 - www.webafrica.co.za

Cost:

za.net - R57
co.za - R99
biz - R149
name - R149
com - R149
net - R149
org - R149
us - R149
info - R149
co.uk (2 years minimum) - R249
mobi new! - R249
org.za (R49 renewal) 259
bz 376
tv 399
za.com - R1,000

2 - www.sadomain.co.za

The cost:

.CO.ZA - R100
.COM - R145 register
.INFO - R145 register
.BZ - R400

.CC - R400
.ORG - R145 register
.CO.UK - R240 register

Re: PRE-A. Task 2C-4, Q2

There are many services for registering a domain name. Some are more reputable than others and are able to offer further services once a domain name has been registered through them. For international websites a .com domain should be used and for local websites a .co.za or similar domain would be sufficient.

I will list three companies that I found with prices that are quite different from each other.

eHost: .co.za: R120 per year
.com: R200 per year

SA Domain .co.za: R100 per year
.com: R145 per year

Serve-Hosting .co.za: R55 per year
.com: R85 per year

Some companies will offer incentives to stay with them and not transfer once the year is over. They will offer free email addresses, private domain registration and starter websites.

Internet Service Providers pay fees to different bodies namely VeriSign and ICANN, depending on the type of name ie. .com, .net etc.

Many sites advertise 'free' domain registration and then charge for renewal or generate fees by offering other paid services. Some will also note that with a free domain no advertising will be done. I was able to find a site that will register second level domain names locally za.net and za.org to companies, private individuals or non-profit organizations. The registrar does however not own the name and this could cause problems when the name needs to be transferred to a new host. They also have the right to cancel or suspend your name based on certain rules that need to be followed. This could cause problems if you are using the website for business purposes.

Most domain registrars price their services and products to address both the annual fees and the administration fees that must be paid to ICANN

Mweb:

Local Domain Registration (.co.za/.org.za) - R79.00
International Domain Registration (.com/.org/.biz/.info/.mobi) - R199.00

.co.za/.org.za domains are subject to a R79 annual renewal
payable at the end of each year.

.com/.org/.net/.biz/.info/.mobi domains are subject to a R199 annual renewal payable at the end of each year.

Webafrica

za.com - R1,000

The registration fee goes to the ISP, who then pays a fee to a domain name registrar.

Yes, there is ISP's that provide free registration but you will need to pay a year renewal.

I am giving two domain registration services which are based in Switzerland.

1. http://www.datazug.ch
registration fee: 50.00 Swiss Francs
Monthly fee: 17.00 Swiss Francs per month

2. http://www.centralnet.ch/
Monthly fee: 29.50 per month. This includes the registration cost.

If I develop in HTML, Javascript and Dreamweaver, option 1 would be applicable, but, they only offer the ".ch" domain. However, if I want to develop a website in PHP, mySQL with a ".com" domain - option 2 would be the one that I accept. The registration fee is included in the monthly price. There is a company called Switch which relates to ICANN for Switzerland. The registration process goes through them.

The benefits will relate as to what the person wants to do. The benefits may be that you have access to more software and you pay a little bit more. On the otherhand, you may develop a website using basics and when you want to apply newer technology, the ISP may not be able to adapt to yor wishes. It is the study of what you want and what ISP has what to offer which is the bargaining issue.

3. Domain name registration:
www.serv.co.za
the price changes depending on the domain extention for example:
.co.za R55.00 for 1yr
.za.net R5.00 for 1yr
.za.org R5.00 for 1yr

Other extentions are more expensive and price increase ever year or so as below:
Domain Ext 1 Year 2 Years 3 Years 5 Years 10 Years
.com R 85.00 R 171.00 R 256.00 R 425.00 R 850.00
.net R 85.00 R 171.00 R 256.00 R 425.00 R 850.00
.org R 85.00 R 171.00 R 256.00 R 425.00 R 850.00
.biz R 85.00 R 171.00 R 256.00 R 425.00 R 850.00
.info R 85.00 R 171.00 R 256.00 R 425.00 R 850.00
.us R 85.00 R 171.00 R 256.00 R 425.00 R 850.00

Other domain hosting sites charge a monthly fee for example www.register.com charges $8.95 per month.
I could not find any ISP’s that offer a free registration
The most common form of charge is a once of registration fee then a monthly or yearly fee afterwards.
The registration fee goes to ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers)

Re: PRE-A. Task 2C-4, Q2
February 24, 2010 10:02PM
Some domain name registration services include:

- Cozahost.com
- Webafrica.co.za

a) Cost to register a domain name:

Depending on the level of the additional services, the profit margin of the ISP and their pricing strategy, domain registration prices can vary greatly.

- Cozahost.com charges R 249.00 for an initial registration and the setup of your home page. The Annual renewal is R 175.00 per year after the first year, ie starting in 2011.

- Webafrica.co.za charges the following:

- za.net: R57
- co.za: R99
- biz: R149
- name: R149
- com: R149
- net: R149
- org: R149
- us: R149
- info: R149
- co.uk (2 years minimum): R249
- mobi new!: R249
- org.za (R49 renewal): R259
- bz: R376
- tv: R399
- za.com: R1,000

b) Registration fee

As a domain name by itself does not entitle you to a web page, email or anything else, the ISP is responsible for providing a service by providing you with a web page and/or email addresses for the domain name. Your ISP will then charge a fee to register the domain name on your behalf with the relevant domain authority, and provide one or more options to make your domain "alive". The costs they ISPs charge go towards a fee for initial registration and for annual renewal. In addition, ISPs provide additional services and will add an additional charge on top of the basic domain registration cost. Internet Solutions has been appointed the ICANN accreditation, allowing them to deal directly with registries. In this way, registration fees flow through the ISP and to ICANN.

c) Free domain name registration:

Regarding a free service, it is important to check the fine print. This will often reveal that the service is in fact not free, and in many cases "free" domain names become the property of the service provider.

These fees are annual. I've just selected these two examples but more options can be found at the above URL.

To whom does the registration fee go?

The fee is split between the company through which you choose to register and ICANN.

Do any ISPs provide a free domain name registration service?

Free registration on condition that you choose them as your host is most common.

3. Herewith 2 domain registration services
Prices vary, depending on the extension or the length of the contract
1. Serve-Hosting (www.sadomain.co.za)
.co.za R55.00 yearly to register
.com R85 yearly or R425 for 5 years

2. MWEB (www.mwebbbusiness.co.za)
Local (.co.za / org.za) R79.00 yearly to register
International (com / org / net , etc) R199.00 yearly to register

To whom does the registration fee go?
The registration fee is split between the registration company & ICANN.

Do any ISPs provide a free domain name registration service?
Free registration if you choose to host with them is an option some companies offer.

Just registering a domain does not automatically entitle you to a web page, some companies will give you a small “space” if you register with them, but if your webpage is a large file additional costs are incurred. So it’s easy to register a domain but you must make sure you understand what you are getting & what you are paying for.

Re: PRE-A. Task 2C-4, Q2

There are quite a few options at your disposal when choosing a domain name and the price can vary just as much. Almost every domain name registration company does hosting as well. There are allot of domain name registration and hosting companies out there. So first you need to decide if you want a global enterprise or just a local business. If you want to go global then register a.com website, which will cost you:
• Go Daddy $6.99 per year, but you have to use them for the host for multiple years.
• Mad Dog $7.49 for one year, but you get allot of extras
If you want to stay local you can register a .za or .au domain name which is allot cheaper than a .com website:
• Afrihost.com R300 once off
• At Yola you get a website builder tool and hosting for $19.95 per year
So if you want to register a domain name you must do allot of research to find a one that suits your specific needs.
Some ISP will provide free domain name registration but will have limited functionality or there will be terms and conditions that benefits them.

It would cost anywhere from R60 a year and up to register a domain name and the isp then pays money to the body which is then affiliated with the name.i.e .co.za or .com
and I have seen offers for free domain registration advertised.

2. Where do registration fees go.

Domain name registration costs depend on the costs levied by the central domain authority plus the costs of an ISP to support and provide infrastructure for the domain name.

Domain names are registered with central domain name authorities. For instance, a .co.za domain name is registered with Uniforum, while a .com domain name is registered with, for instance, Dotster.

3. Do ISP's provide freed domain name registration services

They ussually do aslong as you take a hosting pakage with them, which generally means you are paying for it somehow

Domain registration service: www.names.co.za
Fees range from R200.00 to R600.00 depending on the type of TLD.
Domain registration service: www.web4africa.co.za
Fees range from R105.00 to R175.00 per year depending on the type of TLD.

Application fees for domain registration goes to ICANN and the Service Provider.
There is always a certain cost involved , it’s just not easily identifiable making one to believe that you are getting it at no cost. The small print is definitely somewhere.
