pros:
post graduate!!!!!
can use combination of COS and INF to an extent
no [less related] subjects such as accounting, psychology

cons:
expensive (my COS430B = R2472, other subjects R1286)
workload heavier (obviously)
not a lot of subjects to choose from if you only do COS or only do INF subjects
exams in feb (means not being able to slack as much in Dec necessarily)
less students doing post grad so less students to make contact with
no supplementary exams
seems they chop and change on the subjects e.g. network management not being offered this year, as well as INF460
thought the registrion would go quicker now that im doing 2nd year hons, but its still taking a while.

yours?

They don't offer any of the best looking cos modules; Compiler construction etc

The costs are nowhere near any other open university.

But anyway, why isnt the following offered in 2010? Will it be offered in 2011?

• COS406B: Database theory
• COS409E: Parallel algorithms
• COS417E: Theory of program languages 2
• COS418F: Compiler construction
• COS419G: Operating systems

Thanks

Maybe Dr van der Merwe can put some light on the subject.

Maybe give them a phone call.. I would be interested in the response as I too would like to take the Compiler Construction course.
They did offer 419G in 2009 I think. I think Celene took it. I considered it; i think it was an introduction to the theory of distributed OS.
409 also sounds fascinating.

419 was actually in 2008 (know this because I started in 2008 and decided to take OS in 2009...and they were so nice to remove it)

I suppose they don't have people to offer the courses.

Then again with most of the modules we're used to get a textbook and use only that to study, why not for these too

I really hope those subjects are available again next year - many of them are really fascinating and I would love to do them. They were available last year, and some of the subjects that I registered for this year weren't if I remember correctly. So it's entirely possible that they alternate every year but it would be great to get an official confirmation?

Back on topic - I guess if you are really interested in these, you'd want to do them anyway. And if not - you'll probably give up somewhere along the line because of the workload, particularly if you're trying to manage a career at the same time. The only downside to me is the total lack of social life smile I think the costs involved are tiny relative to any other university (I was also considering the Wits CS Hons last year).

Raising an old post. Does anyone know when the list of honours modules will be available for 2011?

Hi there,

I'm studying BSc IT full time at NWU Potchefstroom and finishing this year. I would like to start working next year and start my honours degree part time. Is it difficult to work and study Hons. BSc IT part time? Please I would really like some advice?

Thanks

Hons BSc Information Technology is manageable part time.
Hons BSc Computer Science is almost impoosible part time.

This is only my opinion and the others on the forum may disagree with me completely.

I'm currently doing Hons BSc Computer Science and getting seriously hurt with the Computer Science modules.
