BSC : Information Technology Management Stream (02089 - ITM)

Can someone help me please? Phoning UNISA and emailing them have not helped me at all. I really wanted to do the BSC : ITM and studied hard last year to do MAT011k.

I have passed and now i see that i got 4 years to complete the qualification. That's like 8 modules a year?

I don't think i have any choice as this is what i want to do however .... if i don't complete it by 2013 ... will the modules i have done contribute to the new degree stream being offered? In other words is there hope for those who complete this?

Should i persevere with the 8 modules and 'hope' i pass them and make the grade before 2013?

Can someone please explain the options i have?

Also i heard that i can register any module for either semester 1 or yearly? True?

How will i know which is the hardest and which is the easier?

How will i know which to register for semester 1 or which for yearly? Or should i do all yearly?

Management (MNG) subjects are easiest, and many are just semester subjects - you can easily do 2 per semester. It's all theory and if you've had some experience in a normal working environment its mostly common sense. Exams for 1st and 2nd year are multiple choice, which is all about memory of arcane facts. The courses are disorganised, and the lecturers pretty useless - they would be fired if they worked anywhere but Unisa. The syllabus is very out of date (80's style Dilbert management), which is useful.

Accounting (ACN) subjects are fairly easy if you have some background in having to do budgets and expense forms at work. There are accountants everywhere and most are happy to help out. It's more practical but little actual theory learning once you understand. The books are good and I found the lecturers some of the best at Unisa. Combine these with heavy theory/learning subjects.

INF subjects are interesting and not usually difficult but if you don't have a job in IT the terminology is heavy going. The exams are often multiple choice, and if you only learn the definitions at the back of the book you can probably get 50%.

CEM is just silly - its about how to use Microsoft office. CSS is also silly and you might get a "bye" on it if you've done higher grade english or when you pass enough subjects.

STS has some difficult concepts but once you have the idea its nice. I think they also don't mark it strictly.

COS subjects are difficult. If you don't program every day and have co-workers to help it's time-consuming and frustrating. Doing multiple languages at once is confusing so try to spread them out.

I'm doing ITM and i have decided to do 5 per semester, so i'll probably finish before 2013. I'll let you know how it goes but so far so good.

I completed my ITM in 4 years working part-time. Did 11, 7, 7, 5 modules a year respectively.

Damn Shauntir ... that's good !!
I doing my Bsc Software Engineering part-time and still struggling to finish by 2013 angry smiley
Did very bad last year by only passing 1 out of 4 modules .. this year i've registered for 8 ( of which 3 have been converted to semester )
What advice to you have for a guy in a similar position as what you were ??
What time of the day did you study ? I take it you're not married like me with 2 kids as well !! eye popping smiley

lol yes I'm not married and have no kids. I find that I used to absorb a lot between 10am and 1pm. Also, during the afternoons after 7pm was pretty good for me. The best thing to do is make sure you go over the textbook and study material at least once. Then just before the exam, swat away at the assignements, that always helped me smile

@Ashley - as all the fist year modules are now semester modules I'd recommend doing at least 4 a semester. Do the 101's (and 111) in the first semester if you can, and the 102's in the second. There'd obviously be an overflow into the first semester of next year.

I wonder if semesterisation will result in a dumbing down of the degree.

I would expect so. Unless a massive refactoring of modules were done.
