Good to have a secondary check of form validation, though am liking the movie database from the textbook, wife will make good use of it to store her ever growing movie collections....

done with topics 3A, 3B, 4A, 4B, 4C.
4C obviously get the "Warning: mail() [function.mail]: "sendmail_from" not set in php.ini or custom "From:" header missing in C:\Program Files\xampp\htdocs\StudentPHP\thankyou.php on line 69
Failed to send the e-mail." message as expected.

--------------------------------------

\also, topic 3B-2; got the directory_navigator to display, but with the listing all on 1 line rather than one below the other. only managed to achieve this by adding a <br> tag at the end of each echo line, like so:

if(is_dir($item))

{

if($item != '.' && $item != '..'winking smiley
echo "<tr><td width='100%'><a href='$PHP_SELF? dir=$dir$item'>$item/</a></td></tr><br>\n";

}

else

echo "<tr><td width='100%'><a href='$dir/$item'> $item</a></td></tr><br>\n";

}
?>
</table>

...in spite of the fact that there is a end table row </tr> tag there already (??!!).

------------------

\am still not quite clear about which of the variables should be declared (in PHP5), so am declaring all the variables appearing in a particular script, for example in thankyou.php i've got:

<?php

$category = $_POST['category'];
$choice = $_POST['choice'];
$firstname = $_POST['firstname'];
$lastname = $_POST['lastname'];
$age = $_POST['age'];
$preferences = $_POST['preferences'];
$mail_to = $_POST['mail_to'];
$mail_subject = $_POST['mail_subject'];
$mail_body = $_POST['mail_body'];

$title = "Thank-you";
include("header.php"winking smiley;
$firstname = HTMLSpecialChars($firstname);
$lastname = HTMLSpecialChars($lastname);
$counter = 0;

etc...... is there a more streamlined way of doing this?

You're not "declaring" the variables here, strictly speaking, you're just "catching" them from the previous page. This is declaring a variable: $var="hallo";

When you have many vars to catch, use @extract....

...aha! i'll have to check up on that one (i was wondering about that thread of yours). thanx.

and what about the issue with the line breaks on the directory navigator? (tho' i know this is probably strictly an HTML issue.)

thanx again

using extract() without using prefixes or the parameter EXTR_SKIP is usually a very big security hole, because it allows an external attacker to overwrite every variable

I have now completed the whole Lesson 4 and it was quite interesting and not as difficult as expected. I just wish someone can tell me how to make sure that my e-mail service is suitable for performing the php tasks and functions.

Since your XAMPP server is not connected to the internet, you will not be able to send emails. i.e. your server exists merely on your computer with no connection to the outside world.
