it is not compulsory for the software engineering stream.

INF320 sucks, did it this year. I would take COS301 over INF320 although I haven't done the former but will probably take it this year.

thanx Steven but I've already passed all those modules.

Hey,

The rules for this stream are on Part 7 of calendar (p17),

you need least 3 of: (you only have 2)
COS301Y
COS3114
COS3216thumbs up
COS340A
COS351Dthumbs up

but I have cos361Fsmile
Re: 3rd level BSC modules combination[software eng]
December 09, 2008 09:28AM
i don't think cos361f is part of the core modules, sorry
also i'm not an authority, but IMHO you'll need to drop an INF module to NDP (or COS361) and take one of COS301,COS340 OR COS311 to do a software engineering stream

Specialised degrees are being phased out, next year is the last you can register for one (soft eng that is). after that its all general BSc degrees (which you have now)

This level comprises 8 modules, the following 2 of which are compulsory:
INF303D :thumbs up Principles of databases (Information Systems 303)
INF305F :thumbs up Advanced systems development (Information
Systems 305)
plus at least 1 of the following modules:
INF307H : thumbs upDatabase design and implementation (Information
Systems 307)
INF308J : thumbs upSoware project management (Information
Systems 308)
INF320E : Human-computer interaction II (Information
Systems 320)
plus at least 3 of the following modules:
COS301Y : Theoretical computer science 3 (Computer Science
301)
COS3114 : Advanced programming (Computer Science 311)
COS3216 :thumbs up Operating systems and architecture (Computer
Science 321)
COS340A : Computer graphics (Computer Science 340)
COS351D :thumbs up Techniques of artificial intelligence (Computer
Science 351)
The remaining modules may also include:
APM311Y : Numerical methods 2 (Applied Mathematics 311)
COS361F :thumbs up Formal logic 3 (Computer Science 361)

Mabye it is best to phone or email someone at UNISA and confirm if the modules you have done are correct for the software eng stream?

sorry to be the bearer of bad newssad smiley

worst case you are still a graduate w/ a B.Scsmileys with beer

unless i misread it...the best people to ask would be the Admissions department. They could look at the modules and give you the right answer.

@Mr Church, RobM is correct. In addition to COS361 you still
need 3 modules from the above list. He is also correct in
saying that you should drop/swap one of the INF modules for
a COS module listed above. If you decide to do 5 INF modules
the 5th one will be regarded as extra (or NDP) but you will
still be short of one COS module. We could be wrong, but as
Shauntir said find out from UNISA to confirm.

I think I will go for the general BSC for now.

I got 41% for cos3114 so after I pass the supp, I will convert to the software engineering stream. if I don't I will stick with the general.

can I swap an INF module for a COS module?.
Re: 3rd level BSC modules combination[software eng]
December 09, 2008 10:18AM
for soft eng you have -> INF303,INF305,COS321, COS351, COS311

then choose three of INF307, INF308, INF320, COS361

You can and you'd better do so.

INF verges on being pathetic and uninspiring.

Is it possable to Graduate with only one major subject(e.g INF)? or do we really need two?
avatar Re: 3rd level BSC modules combination[software eng]

It is possible to graduate with one major, in fact this is normal.
Software engineering is the only stream for computing(That I am aware of) that allows a dual major and is special in this regard.(It waves several rules that otherwise apply to make it possible)

So my combination is perfect if I move from soft eng to general(i.e one major[inf] graduate).

er.. I thought it was normal to graduate with 2 majors. when I was at wits you had to twist their arms to only have 1 major. at wits I had a chemistry and geology major. If you do compsci there, then you have to have a maths and compsci major combination

You would have to be careful that you are not breaking any of the general rules as a result. Which very well could be possible as all of the above mentioned wavers fall away when you drop the stream.

Not sure how the new rules etc. have changed for the streams though so best to RTFM tongue sticking out smiley

Well for one thing a double major in COS and INF is probably far more useful then a single major in INF, I would certainly not even consider hiring someone with just a major in INF tongue sticking out smiley

Other then that though there is no real reason. Except of course that you have to actually carefully consider all the rules when choosing your subjects instead of just following the easy stream guide.(Which requires reading all of these rules)

phasing out of streams does not apply for next year if you are an existing student - you have to continue with your streams - I think the cutoff date is 2012 or soemthing - don't quote me on this, I don't get undergrad info anymore.

and unisa does generally work with double majors as well - other friends of mine have had chemistry and maths as majors at unisa.
avatar Re: 3rd level BSC modules combination[software eng]

Well for computer science at UNISA all the other streams(As far as I am aware) are single majors.
Therefore at UNISA for computer science single majors are the norm. and again as far as I am aware the only way to get a double is to do Software Engineering stream.

I also have not read the undergrad stuff for a while though so I could be out of date/horribly wrong on this.

Rule for the BSC degree.

(b) The curriculum must include at least ONE MAJOR SUBJECT. For this purpose, each major consists of at least four modules (or one
course) on third level as specifi ed for each major subject. A particular module cannot be counted as a credit for more than one major
subject.
