CT seems to have escaped the BEE wave better than Joburg. Just remember down here we got the mountain and all the time in the world. Traffic to Mutal is not that bad and "YOU CAN USE THE TRAIN" even if your white.

Old Mutual is at the train station aptly known as Mutual.

Personally I don't work for them, but a friend did before going overseas and he was happy. But do your homework, cuase if you move down here and don't like it, good paying jobs are really scarce in CT - and the cost of accomodation is really high.

half the IT ppl in CT have been through OM.. they're a huge corporate, if you are getting an increase from a salary in jhb then take it, You're lucky to just get a decrease coming down here..you can always find something else once you're settled ..

The area they're in is not so lekka but then its bound to be better than jhb tongue sticking out smiley

Buying in CT is pricey but renting is cheaper (or maybe the high bonds make the 1/3 rent you get for your place seem a bargain for tenants

im in Port Elizabeth.
its a huge shift from this "town" to a proper city.
i've got MAX 20min traffic in the 20km from my home to work.
it's gonna be a major paradigm shift.

thaks for the advice, didn't know they have had such a lot of IT guys in there.

i can forget about buying, now its finding a place to rent, finding a creche for the kid, finding the shortest path to work...

cbrunsdonza, i dont have experience in CT, but from what i picked up on careerjunction is that its better than PE.

the boss set me up for a meeting tomorrow morning. he's either gonna tell me to f off to cape town or stay on with a counter offer.

lycium, AUS 2011, obviously a visit to NZ sometime, i'll bring you some Oros and Niknaks or whatever you miss hehe and we can bury the battle axe and talk sht.

is R3500 increase per month or per year?

I contracted there for 1 1/2 year. I found the people very pleasant to work for. If you know your roads, traffic to there is better than to the middle of CT. The department I worked in was very organised with a project manager, BA, Dev's and dedicated tester. They used the basic SDLC concepts. Did find that the "normal" departments which we "serviced" wasn't all that clued up. Email me, can give you the name of a friend that is currently there whom you can contact.

increase per month.
the boss said i must stay. he'll even pay for my studies.
i think i fked up now.
they didn't wanna give me a raise so i made plans to leave.
then when i said im leaving they're trying to keep me now and they look at my demands.
now i can prob forget about OM if i dont take it now.

My rule in life has always been to not accept any counter offers, if you decided to leave it was probably for a good reason, and things would probably not change....what if the next increase goes the same way?

most companies will make counter offers when they realise you are leaving. In my opinion if you are not 'important' enough to get an increase in the first place then its a slap in the face to you when they offer an increase as a counter offer.

i was only assigned a 7% increase according to Independent Performance Appraisal.
i didn't say it but i wasnt happy with it.
last time around these mofo's kept me working for more than a year and didn't wanna employ me permanently.
I wanted to resign. they made me an offer

i fought for 6 months for 230 hours overtime that was never paid.
I wanted to resign. they paid me

I said im sick of getting paid R5k a month
I wanted to resign. they made me an offer. it more than double now with all the fighting at least

it seems most mortals have to fight for everything.

F*()_)_K them for only offering a counter offer when you have another offer.

Real f^&*()k heads. You can't trust them.

Go to OM.

If you don't speak up you can't expect a higher offer really. Handing out extra money to people who aren't asking for it isn't very good business sense.

That on the other hand is a different story..

jxharding - Dude, abondon ship !!! Shitberg ahead, abondon ship.

I undestand you 100% - similar situation. Now I don't talk about salaries on this forum for 1 simple reason - the guys in Jozie do not understand how we can work for 5K and still smile.

I was in a similar situation as you - I got two job offers and made the move. I know earn nearly double my salary in 1.5yrs - 3 raises and next one due in 4 mths.

Since your from PE you will fit in quiet nicely into CT - no unmet expectations like the brothers up north have of us.

Don't accept counter offers, it just means they got you by the nuts for the reast of your career - hands up who has not made this mistake before.

Anyway - PE is not too far from CT, so if your home sick you can go home for a long weekend.smile

how happy is your wife to move?

How often does your salary get increased? When I was told what my fixed salary would be, I was told we'd look at it again in 6 months time, I thought that that was a short space of time especially seeing as I'm happy with my salary.

I will never ever be happy with my salary...

we keep on buying expensive stuff until we want more money (salary) to buy more expensive stuff.
what a vicious cycle.

More like the petrol price keeps going up, interest rates keep going up, Eskom wants 50% more for doing less. That's the vicious cycle

But then again, they say "Most people are to busy earning a living to make any money."

That could be it.

That's sad, it means you'll never be happy.

I also have a "policy" - if they didn't want to pay me the money originally, why am I important only when I decide to leave? Take the offer from OM, get the new experience.

@tracey....never happy with my salary does not mean unhappy in everything else...it means ambition, to always want to do better...

You need to also remember the most super wealthy only achieved their success late in lives !!!

Money is not everything.

I gave up a very good paying sales job (with no personal life) to settle down as a family man with a meger salary. I'm content with what I have and always make sure that each year I'm growing financially without sacrificing my family commitments.
