Not a chance. If I ever do decide to do honours it will enver be at UNISA.

i might.. but after this past few days I will explore my other options first. Unisa will be a last resort.

Aside from the fact that there service is rapidly getting worse and worse.
UNISA lecturers do not tend to research very exciting things (As the list of project modules show) So I don't think I would want to do a thesis at UNISA.

This question is probably not aimed at me but I don't know if I'll even do honours when I eventually get my degree. It would have taken me seven long years to get it so I'll definitely need a year or two's break from studying before I consider doing honours.

If doing masters requires public speaking, than I'm not going to do it.

NEVERRRRR smiling smiley im finishing up with my Honors at UNISA this year....and that will be it for me and UNISA. I have to agree...the service has gone down RAPIDLY in the last 2 years.

Sad really...first few years was so much fun.

I think that even the lecturer are 'gatvol' with all the problems that UNISA now pose to learners.

Really....a fine institution in sy maai sad smiley

I am finishing my honours this year. Yes I will do it at UNISA. Why? Comfort zone thing. I have never studied at any Uni other than UNISA.I know their systems right up to their incompetencies. I have to admit though that they were very efficient when I did my Diploma & my BCom. From last year I have had such bad experiences with them. I think generally, their post grad department needs a major revamp in service delivery. Would you believe my study parcel last year went to the USA, then they erroneously charged me foreign student fees when my exam centre is Randburg. Now this mess with Honours Re-Reg.

TAs a university student in South Africa, there was limited access to career choices as well as course material, it was tough, and now, how the world has changed, all because of the internet.

How would you like to study at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) for free? It has been nearly six years since MIT first announced their MIT OpenCourseWare (OCW) program. More recently, MIT announced that the OCW program, a free and open educational resource (OER) for educators, students, and self-learners around the world, is online and will be completed by 2008. The OCW provides open access to course materials for up to 1,550 MIT courses, representing 34 departments and all five MIT schools. The goal is to include materials from all MIT courses by next year.
MIT provides just one of the 10 open source educational success stories detailed below.

herewith is a link to world class courseware from MIT, let's be fair and open and share it with everyone,
below are links to some of the top resources for both students and educators.

I did my BSc. in IT through UNISA, and now I am doing hons in computer science through UCT. I must say that I am more comfortable with UNISA's system...like, you know exactly the exam date and the study material.I got a little bit lost in here since we don't use the textbook rather than the lecture's notes(it's a big cost save though). I think I should do the hons through UNISA and then Master though some other university.

that was the initial plan, UNISA for honours and masters. I get to UNISA and i think, ummmm maybe not.

Now i just wanna get my honours out of the way and leave UNISA and never come back.

I think it would be ideal to do my masters @ UCT but it will depend on where i live when the time comes.

I WILL NOT DO IT THROUGH UNISA, have been here for a year and i've had enough!

In the end, it is all the same. All the professors collaborate, and is external examiners to each other. Universities dont compete, they compliment each other.

With regards to the interesting topic....you choose your topic, so it is up to you to make it interesting. The supervisor gives more guidance with regards to research, as opposed to holding your hand with content.

I did BCom, and BSc Hon at UNISA, I decided to go to tuks for masters because of the research group Espresso. Its aim is to bridge the gap between academia and practice, and it also focuses on software development processes and techniques. I thought it would be applicable to my area of interest.

With regards to admin, tuks is slightly better. I still have to go to the campus though to register, cant do over the internet, and then I still had to run around from one side of the campus to the other for authorisation signatures, and to make payment, standing in queues. The thing that is better, is that when you phone, someone picks up the phone and it is usually the right person.

Also, last your they gave me a R6000 grant, I am not sure if UNISA does this, but it is from the NRF, so I am sure they will.

In the end, deccide what you would like to do in your Masters, then look at the different supervisors available. Choose the supervisor, not the university....

They do both.

You choose a specific topic yes, but it has to be within the field of research that the university generally covers...
I can't go and do some advanced computer graphics topic if there is no-one at UNISA who knows about computer graphics for example..

It is impossible to make the sort of thing UNISA lecturers specialise in interesting (Even with a ton of drugs)

"In the end, deccide what you would like to do in your Masters, then look at the different supervisors available. Choose the supervisor, not the university...."

I.e., choose a supervisor that is good at what you want to do, like computer graphics....

Not my fault you contradict yourself eh.

on the interesting topic...hehehe, quite funny...just dont let mac see your post!

I must say, I did enjoy the formal logic part, I think it is Prof van der Poll or something, he has a great reputation in the academic world. UNISA has very broad areas you can choose from, I still maintain it is up to you....you can do a really good M at UNISA if you want to.

Where exactly did I contradict myself? Supervisors specialise in certain areas....and run research groups that specialise in the same areas...

I chose tuks because of Prof derrick kourie, who runs the espresso research group...

Makes it sound like you can do whatever topic you want at any university and that my point of view that I wouldn't want to be able to do an interesting one at UNISA is invalid, and that the only thing holding this back is my imagination?

This part of your post validates what I said by pointing out that you CANNOT do the same thing at all universities.

Quote

Yes malcolm, which is exactly what I said....
This and the rest of your points following attempt to make it sound like I am an idiot and that you never mentioned the first position above, when in actual fact you did.

Your positions in 1/ and 2/ are either completely contradictory.(Or REALLY REALLY badly worded)

oh my goodness, you got up at the wrong side of the bed hey!

What I was saying is not contradicting you. I said you look for a supervisor who specialises in your area of interest. No matter what university he or she is at....which means all universities cannot offer the same things yes....try doing comp science at UJ...wont happen...so you are misunderstanding what I am saying.

If you felt like an idiot it is your doing...

NB!
Please don't attempt to make it sound like I am in a bad mood just because I think you are contradicting yourself(and pointing it out), My mood happens to be just fine thank you very much.

But you know what malcolm, it is so typical of you to point out technicalities, and deviate from the topic at hand, where I was honestly trying to give people the guidance to make this decision, seeing the I HAVE GONE through the process already, so I know what I am talking about. But as always, you know everything.

Completely contradicting yourself is hardly a technicality...

By contradicting yourself you are confusing them not guiding them, I am trying to clarify how it really is so that people will know the truth instead of being confused?(If not wanting people to be confused is so wrong then I guess I am an evil person...)

Sorry I didn't realise that the fact that you are doing masters means you may contradict yourself at every turn and that this is okay.
I humbly apologise oh great one, how dare I try and have an informed opinion of my own(that is not contradictory)

By not just accepting that you might have said something(perhaps it just came out wrong?) that is contradictory it is you that is being arrogant, not me.
