couut << "Enter value: "; - might be a good place to start looking...

If you are having problems with compiling, paste the error messages as well.

Looks like a spelling mistake though.

Uuh is MingGW not the compiler used by DevC++ ????

Google: dev++ compiler

Bloodshed Software - Dev-C++

It uses Mingw port of GCC (GNU Compiler Collection) as it's compiler. Dev-C++ can also be used in combination with Cygwin or any other GCC based compiler. ...

ummmmm. You install MinGW from the Unisa CD and then the DevC++ IDE.

The IDE is a fancy editor not a compiler. The fact that you click a compile button doesn't mean that it does the compiling. No, it sends the files off to MinGW to do all that work and just displays what MinGW outputs. That's the standard procedure for most, if not all, compilers.

MS Visual Studio doesn't even compile the code you edit inside it. It passes that on to c1.exe.

That is why I stay the hell away from MSVS ... when I was still into MS VisualC++ ('95/'98 days) it caused my then rather speedy P1 to come to a grind...

Nowdays I do it all in Linux - Eclipse or Emacs and then a simple command from the command line to compile and execute.

Maybe you were using a computer that was underpowered for VC. But each to their own. I've never seen Eclipse so I can't comment on it. Emacs and vi (I use the latter at work when working on *nix) are not user-friendly in my opinion so they're bad ambassadors for *nix systems for me.

In my opinion (and also for HCI as well) is that programs should be written for novice as well and expert users, *nix programs only seem to cater for experts and are hectically difficult and unintuitive to learn. I give up too easily. They may be very powerful and full of useful features but the bad interfaces turn me away from them.

Not all users are novices, therefore not all programs should cater to novices.

Emacs/XEmacs was designed for efficient text editing. That was it's only consideration. XEmacs is my main IDE, even on Windows.

Read my comment again. It says novices AND experts. You obviously haven't taken INF120

No one should be discouraged from using Emacs.

It is the ultimate programmers friend. And it is user-friendly.
It just requires a learning curve - and so is not for the plug and pray losers.
