COS311 VS COS321 IN 2008
November 20, 2007 09:13PM
Hi, i've got 1 subject left for B Sc IT Management .
i thought i'd like to do COS311, simply because i battled with COS221 (Systems Architecture - with working out cycles, etc).
i passed COS221 barely. I battled with Assembly. No excuses, just didn't get into the whole thing.
I can do C#, i do it at work a lot. I am interested in learning advanced programming but i dont wanna battle and worry that i'll pass it because of no communication with the lecturers or any of that.
from what i heard from at least 1 person, COS311 was the most horrible subject of the degree.
COS321 doesn't look easy, but it looks better than COS221 and it looks easier than COS221.
like a lot of people, not all, i would like to take the easier subject and have a > % of passing. If i ever need advanced programming, i can also take that.
What would you take if you had the chance?

replace line:
COS321 doesn't look easy, but it looks better than COS221 and it looks easier than COS221

with
COS321 doesn't look easy, but it looks better than COS221 and it looks easier than COS311

COS321 is a lot of theory and a lot to learn. Thats about it.

COS311 was hard but when you understand it, it is not that bad.

Both is hard work.

My suggestion, take both if you can afford it.

It is a bit early to sell our books. We are still waiting for examination results.

I wouldn't do this if I were you; cos311
is "advanced programming", which means that
they change it often - chances are that your
cos311 textbook will not be relevant in 2009.

Do cos311 in 2008, this will ensure that your
textbook is relevant.

I may have the older one, but I doubt that it would
be useful. Good luck

that was definitely a worry yes, it's a schlep every time you go to a new version.
i spoke to lecturers on both subjects and they confirmed the same book will be used in 2008 as in 2007

I'd recommend COS321 because it's very easy to pass in this paper. There are 3 cores which you have to study hard and they are: deadlock avoidance, Page replacements and the algos: Shortest Job First, Non preemptive priority and Round Robin. Those 3 counts around 53% in exams. Well I've scored 64% and I'm very happy with this module.

I would also think you made the right call. COS311 was an absolute pain, although I think they made the exam easier because of all of the stress and complaints.

If you haven't got a heavy schedule, don't mind fighting to get the software installed and working and you are pretty familiar with C++, then it could work. I battled like crazy to get simple examples to compile and was pretty much ready to give up after a few months. Although it must be said I had a lot on my plate this past year so I couldn't afford to spend hours figuring out solutions to problems experienced. Thankfully I qualified to write the exam and made it by the skin of my teeth.
