Problems with results limiting (3 replies)

So I'm basically finishing up with my project and I'm adding "page 1, page 2" etc. links on my pages where there is a possibility a very large list can be displayed.

I got course_man and student_man to work correctly.

My problem comes on the list.php page.

Once the page is loaded, you see a list of buttons which represents all the registered courses.

Let's say for instance HTML is clicked, it displays a list of students registered for HTML.

If the amount of students registered for the course is greater than 10 there will be a link "page 2" for the user to click on to see more results.

Problem is, once I click on "page 2" it goes to list.php and it just shows the list of courses again.

The way I did the other pages was via $_GET...but on this page I can't as once the page is reloaded the list of students is removed.

Please help

I have currently set up my code to edit student details using basically the same form as the student registration (since all the fields are the same).

Is it okay to direct the user from student_man.php to student_reg.php to edit student details or do I need to do something else, for example:
- include the student details form from a seperate php file on both student_man and student_reg (which would seemingly require large chunks of variable repetition)
- generate the form from an external function on both pages
?

in student reg i made all the validating for the form
now is it necessary to do all that in the editing of a student? (done 50% of it so far)
and i dont see why an admin would make a name : 11111111 :D

I've been looking for the book mentioned in the tutorial:

Beginning PHP5, Apache, and MySQL Web Development (Programmer to Programmer) (Paperback) by Elizabeth Naramore, Jason Gerner, Yann Le Scouarnaec, Jeremy Stolzm Michael K. Glass 2005, Wiley Publishing Inc, ISBN: 0-7645-7966-5.

But I haven't bought my copy yet.

However, i bought another book: PHP Programming with MySQL
//Second Edition by Don Gosselin, Diana Kokoska, Robert EasterBrooks.

ISBN-10: 0-538-46814-9.

I know the recommended book is the first book mentioned above, but hoping that the book i have will help me understand PHP better than what I do now.

I'm trying to check if a certain value is NOT in an array.
Now I know I can check if a value is in an array with in_array...

but would something like this:

Language: PHP
if (!in_array(value, array)) {
    ...
}

work to check if the value is not in the array?

or could I do something like this:

Language: PHP
if (in_array(value, array) === false) {
    ...
}

Ok, I managed to complete the student registration part and displaying the available courses, but now I'm struggling to link the student with a course, any advice?
I have my student submit info and course info on the same page, the problem I have is that the student number gets created when the info is submitted so how can I get the number at the same time when it is being created and use it in the course_student table? Any advice?

Here is something I came up with and am sure it will be useful to everyone that reads it. :-)
I started this course with an open mind and no idea about what the language PHP is all about. Starting with the echo and print, I realized it was going to be interesting and I knew I had to be dedicated to actually understand the language. The tut101 was quite explanatory and i love that book! PHP5, APACHE, MYSQL WEB DEVELOPMENT. Following each step and examples that I came across built my knowledge more and more.

I believe in patience! hmmn... Yes patience is an important key in dealing with coding. Because if you are not patient, you will get frustrated and all worked out due to the fact that you can not figure out what is actually wrong with your codes all in the name of progress.
Another thing that is very essential is you thinking deep about what next to be done to make your a application a finished project and a better application. It is not over until it is over! You might think you are done and all you want to do is relax but I tell you friend... You not done yet! Take your time to review your codes and am sure you will find something stupid that you have done so as to make corrections.
For example:

Not to stress you with the numerous words of mine,

When you click on the Edit button next to a student on the student_man.php page.
And it brings up a form to edit his info...should the course he registered for be editable as well?

I would assume yes, but I"m only making double sure.

Hi Mac I need some clarity. I've been busy with some work projects, finally I have time to concentrate fully on my prac. My question is: this system should be done from an administrator's point of view, by that I mean an employee who will register students an assign them from the courses, students they don't have to go on line and register themselves? The reason I'm asking this I was struggling in making the right decision in terms of making a registration page for this administrator or not. what I have done currently I assumed that this person is already registered as access is exclusive to employees of the company. The only person that would need to register is the student.

I'm busy putting together my student_reg.php page.

After trying a lot of other techniques I've finally used $_SESSION variables to get the text the user input to stay in the field if the form is submitted with errors.
In other words, if the user typed in his surname as "Malan" and submits the form, which throws back the error he didn't enter and email address...his surname "Malan" is still in the input field next to Surname.

Is it ideal to do this with $_SESSION variables? Or isn't it recommended...I've heard from a PHP developer that that isn't what $_SESSION is for...

Hi mac

I was just wondering about how the marking will be done, like lets say to make a student register for multiple courses at once (make app better), how much marks will that be?

i know you/teachers have to mark alot of assignments
so will we be penalised for very long code?
i mean we are noobs, so if something requires 5 lines of code and we do 20 just for argument sake :-)

My first website will be finished the next week. the second one in the end of this month. is it necessary to public it on the internet now or I have to wait the end of the course period?
In my point of view, this web site will be an other vision and idea to participate to this forum. I didn't send messages to tell you " I finshed the section number X " and I will not do it in the future because these kind of messages do not help any one on this forum.

Ok, I know mac isn't going to mark the database but the php code, but I will still like to figure this out since I don't know if its my code or the db structure causing this.

When I submit a standard SA id number (13 chars) to the database its value in the table is the maximum signed value of int "2147483647" even though in the db I selected bigint in the db, does anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it, what are you guys using in your field's datatypes(varchar?) and are you getting the submitted values in your tables? And even when I changed the field to varchar I still get "2147483647".

Here's a link to this question that I asked on stackoverflow, I'm still not getting the right values"entered/submitted" values in my db, so any advice would be appreciated.

I did my manage courses page.

And the way I set it up is I have a page listing all the courses with hypelinks "Add another course, edit and delete"...
Which links to a handler page which executes the desired function.
I read through the tutorial letter last night and it states we must use forms.

Is my way of hyperlinks wrong and must I make adjustments to put it into forms? I don't want to lose points over something so stupid.

I'm playing around with the field types in my database...
and when I use INT it seems I lose the 0 at the beginning of my cellphone/telephone/fax numbers.

Do you guys recommend using VARCHAR instead?
